Renovating Flooring Living Room

Carpet or floorboards in living room?

I'm looking to sell my house in the near future, I currently have carpet in my living room but wanting to know what people would prefer grey carpet or rustic walnut floor boards? I like the homely comfort of carpet but like the cleanliness of floorboards. Either way i will have a very large rug. TIA

go with wooden if you are getting a large rug. it sounds very nice.

and I dont really think it makes sense to have a rug on carpet.

Wood floors will attract a potential buyer over carpet for maintenance and allergy reasons.

A large area rug in the seating area will give the cosy feel you are looking for, especially in a plush, warm mid grey!

I'd not previously experienced carpet in a dining area until my parents built their house. It's probably okay in an adults only environment. Just add children to create squashed food thoroughly rubbed in, beetroot and similar stains, and/or marks that no-one knows how they arrived and science hasn't worked out how to get rid of them. They have what started out as bland beige carpet, now it's multicoloured and "interesting" (for want of a better term). God Bless the Grandchildren. :-)

We took up the carpet in our hall and living areas and polished the cypress boards for the same reason in a one storey house. Our neighbour said she could hear the kids running around the house in the quiet ofthe early morning, glad we weren't trying to live under that!

Does the step have a nosing edge? You could run the carpet over the lip of the nosing and provide a carpet edge along the width of the step. Keeps the appearance cleaner overall.

beejas, You obviously already have allot of timber and I think certainly stick with the timber but you might like to use some nice carpet squares under the bed so that its a bit more cosy in winter. Houzz had a forum on the correct placing of carpet squares in and around furniture including bedrooms, as well as suggestions on types of material and suitable colours, if you search, you'll find great inspiration. As from a design point of view, a rug on top of carpet is not advisable. Also home buyers would ask themselves " what sinister grime is being hidden under the rug". In addition, potential buyers will more effectively visualise their furniture and tastes in the lounge room with floorboards, as they wont need to change the carpet. Rather, they would consider to add or not add a rug that fits in with their decor or colour scheme. Good luck with the decision making process.

I prefer wooden floorboards. My kids have asthma and allergies. They’re also easier to keep clean and I prefer the aesthetic.

In our new extension we are having floorboards in our living area, currently we have carpet and never again will I have carpet in such a high use area. Floorboards are much easier to clean, especially if your living area leads to outdoors
