How should I style my entryway?
Just bought a new house and I don’t know how to style my entryway.
Eventually under the stairs I will build a wine room. But what can I do for now?

Walls are white in the house. The kitchen has dark grey cabinets. It’s an open plan house

4 years agoYour entry is an opportunity for something dramatic, and the stair design is great, but is let down by the very neutral floor tiles and paint. I would be looking to some dramatic wall paper that complements the floor tiles to cover at least one of the walls that continues from the ground floor to the first floor, like in these photos. Also consider a feature light fitting (rather than downlights) that looks great from below, as well as looking from above.

Comments (10)If your concerned about the screens not looking quite right with the house or railings, or if you dont have the budget for an expensive screen, you could also consider a growing an easy maintenance, fast growing vine like Star Jasmine over a less expensive screen and training it a little way through the railing to tie them both in. Star Jasmine will grow happily in a pot and will cover everything, hiding all sins! It will also give you a lovely green outlook, complete privacy and the scent of the flowers on a summer night is intoxicating. I have star jasmine covering two totally different 2m high cheap screens (one lattice and one rio metal bar) in my courtyard which separates my yard from my neighbours and it provides a gorgeous leafy outlook with total privacy and covers the screens entirely from base to top so you cannot see the unattractive lattice or rio behind it and all it needs is the occasional trim....See MoreHow should I update my kitchen?
Comments (12)I always think of how I'm going to use a room first. Most women seem to complain one of the worst chores is getting the groceries from the car to the kitchen and putting them away. For this reason, to me access to the kitchen should keep this in mind so when your entry is right near the hall doorway, that is the door I would keep. A small kitchen can be very difficult when entertaining and people want to help. I solved this in my old home by putting a hatch between the kitchen and dining room allowing extra cupboard space to fill the doorway and giving extra bench space too. Wall cupboards can also be put above the hatch. This means when dinner is being served or cleared, you have helpers clearing to the bench and others in the kitchen moving to or from the hatch. You don't have a large enough kitchen for many helpers, but I found this system worked a treat, with 2 people working each side things moved quickly and efficiently with helpers not falling over each other....See MoreHow should I light my very high cathedral ceiling?
Comments (18)I'd make sure I had probably 3 'zones' or options . It is just crying out for a big industrial style centrepiece on 3 or 4 heavy chains , maybe even with 15 or 20 candles . Just as I'm writing this , I'm even wondering how difficult it would be to get 15 shorter stubbier candles and drill out the middles , and thread a cheap 12 volt LED through each one ? The local electrical supplier charges something like $12 for 10 -- you'd have to wire them , but its low voltage so a soldering iron and heatshrink tubing would do wonders . look way more authentic than those cheesy ones with flickering 240 volt bulbs and fake melted wax on shiny plastic bases ! Anyway , that would be my centrepiece , even if you had to use a transformer etc -- drop it to the ceiling line height . Then I'd do a seperate zone -- probably single LED spotlights ( prob in black ) . at least one each beam , some pointing up , some across to the other 'slope' , but also some pointing downwards , because you'll need to look for dropped coins or handkerchiefs or phone chargers every now and then haha . And the 3rd zone would be wall uplights and downlights , because I can almost guarantee there will be times you want light , but you don't want or need to emphasis the height . If its not too late , I'd have them maybe 1.5mtrs from the floor , and the covers in an aged copper or similar panels , and that would match the style of the centrepiece light too . I'd have the spotlights a completely seperate style though -- more modern and plainer , but not ultra-modern , if that makes sense ....See More

4 years agoI agree with previous comments you need strong statement, I would suggest aubergine colour,it’s regal it goes with almost all the colours and it’s absolutely beautiful and most important it will go really nice with you tiles.

You could go for a large artwork on back wall, add a fabulous chair and some gorgeous floor lamps, would make a real statement and highlight your beautiful stairs .

4 years agoThe trouble is those clinical shiny tiles. A beautiful textured hallway rug would make a start. A wonderful wooden console, displaying your favourite pieces, and a textured large painting on the far wall. Then you can decide on whether you need to paint the walls, or wall paper.

You need something that will draw people into your space and make them want to see what is around the corner.
