See How an Architect Has Used Bold Colour to Add Joy to Her Home

In this episode of Houzz TV Live, architect Sophie Nguyen gives a virtual tour of several spaces in her London home and talks about how she uses vibrant colours in architectural features to create joy. In the basement, which Sophie added to her 19th-century house by digging down and out, a bold red sculptural staircase energises the mood. A courtyard off the basement and a glass floor in the upstairs kitchen and living area bring light into the subterranean space.

In the open-plan kitchen, an all-yellow design creates a cheerful vibe. Plus, in a new home Sophie is currently renovating and plans to move into soon, an eye-catching, deep orange staircase sets an upbeat tone for her future residence.

BRILLIANT!!! ♥️. Love the minimal thinking and use of elements as BOLD colours in each of the spaces. I would have loved to see how the Designer executed her vision in the bedroom areas of the house too.

I do love pops of bold colors and use them in my house as well! As for that much bright yellow in the kitchen (I love bright yellow), it's a little too much color but as long as she likes it, that's great!

I adore this. Please can you tell me the paint shade of the new staircase?

How can a kitchen work when you can’t put hot things down on the worktop?

Thank you! The paint shade of the new staircase is LEYLAND S 0580-Y90R egg shell finish, which was the paint available during the first lockdown in London.

Both your staircases are quite something, Sophie... A real wow factor... I love colour myself but have to say that the block of colour in your kitchen would not appeal, especially in that particular shade of yellow but a good job we all have different tastes, eh.

So many great solutions! The staircases are brilliant but so is the fabulous light in the old house.

Excellent scheme throughout. I love the way the design has managed to bring warmth and interest to the uncluttered minimalist approach.
