See Inside a Designer’s Family-Friendly Kitchen and TV Room
In this episode of Houzz TV Live, designer Amy Elbaum of AE Design gives a virtual tour of the open-plan kitchen and family room in her recently renovated 1960s ranch home in Sherman Oaks, California. In the family room, a built-in cabinet system spans an entire wall, providing storage for kids’ toys and display space for antiques. A long, pillowy sofa and two armchairs create a comfortable spot for watching TV. In the kitchen, Amy took down a wall and added a structural beam to open up the space to the family room and accommodate a large kitchen island. Warm neutral cabinets and a small-scale white tile splashback in a herringbone pattern create a classic, inviting style.

Can you shed some light on the "serous" wood stain technique? I find nothing when I google the term. Is there a particular type of stain you use? Thanks!
I wonder what the wall paint color is? It’s important to make sure wall color and cabinet color work nicely together.

I like many of the ideas here. We have a late 1950s ranch and we want to keep the kitchen separate, plus the longest wall in the living room is all sliding glass doors, but many of the ideas here would work for us too.
Can you tell me the walkway distance between the island and the perimeter cabinetry? Thank you!

I really love the video and going over the needs of the whole family w/each of the changes for practicality and more. I have the same shape as the video had Before now. and i am ready for a change. the couch leaning back in to the Island is a good option for me. Our Sliding door to the back yard is almost the same, or course my square footage is less than this kitchen. Is so challenging to try to make it work, yet accommodate a good size couch in a small Family room. This helped me a lot, thank you so much. Choices choices!
Also, Cesar Stone is a bit pricey for my Budget!, even though I love it
I love the thoughtful design that accommodate the family's needs. However, there are a couple of areas that i find impractical. The eating area by the window is too small to sit comfortably and there is not enough room for a larger table to have a meal. Secondly, the space between the sofa and the island is too narrow to access the items inside the cabinets, unless you move the sofa.
