Thirroul House

Thirroul House has an idyllic coastal setting, surrounded by quaint streets, lush bushland and its own creek. Here, the built environment needs to be protected from the extremes of the natural environment. An extension for this house would create more space, and a refuge in the rare but fraught event that the creek bursts its banks. The extension is elevated above the risk level, with an open base to allow the free movement of water and air. The existing house at the front of the property had been given numerous tweaks over the years. These were unified with a neutral colour palette and by removing faux heritage details. The result is a simple and thoughtfully crafted gable form, with quintessential Aussie fibro cladding and timber details. A contemporary haven that balances heritage Australian architecture and relaxed coastal vibes.
