How Often Should You Replace a Mattress?
A well-made mattress should last you around 10 years, offering consistent support and comfort, so when a mattress starts to develop dips and uneven spots, it’s probably time to invest in a new one. Before you start shopping, consider your lifestyle and your preferred sleeping posture, such as side, stomach, back or a bit of everything. If this differs to your partner, you may like to consider a mattress that offers a different feel on each side to suit individual needs.
Increase the longevity of your mattress. Give it a good airing by turning back the bedlinen for a few hours each week to encourage air circulation. It’s also important to turn and rotate your mattress every three to four months to retain an even surface.

The Right Firmness Is Just as Important as the Correct Size
The firmness and size of your mattress will depend on your weight, height and sleeping positioning. As a general rule, a mattress should be at least 10 centimetres longer then the tallest person using the bed. You can also do a quick firmness check by lying down on a mattress and using your hand to feel how much space you have at the small of your back. If there’s no gap, the mattress is too soft, if it’s a big gap, it’s too firm.
Choose the right support for you. If you sleep on your side or you tend to toss and turn, then you’re already providing natural support and will suit a plush to medium mattress that will mould to your body contours. Firm mattresses may also be more suitable for back or front sleepers who will benefit from the extra support.

Test Drive a Mattress Before You Buy
A quick lie down on a mattress in a showroom isn’t going to represent how it would feel sleeping on it for an entire night. It’s important to think about your sleep patterns and how you use your bed – do you sit up to read, for instance? Be sure to chat to experts in-store to find a mattress type for you. They’ll be able to help you create a unique profile and offer up mattress suggestions to suit your needs.
Do you research. Allow plenty of time when shopping for your mattress, so that you can lie down and properly test each one. It’s recommended you spend at least 15 minutes lying on each one. Also, don’t forget to consider the bed frame you’ll be using. If you are keeping your existing one, ensure the mattress will fit the frame. If you are purchasing a new bed frame, consider how the base will affect the performance of the mattress.

Mattress Terms Explained
Pocket Coil mattresses are the most popular all-rounder featuring springs sewn into individual fabric pockets, helping to distribute body weight evenly. As these coils work independently of each other, movement on one side of the bed is unlikely to disturb the other side, making it a good choice for partners with different sleep postures and patterns.
Coil Spring mattresses are a more affordable option, and feature a single wire looped into coils and interlaced into the top and bottom of the spring frame.
Memory Foam mattresses typically feature a viscoelastic material that contours to your body as you sink into it.
Mattress toppers are a great buy as they not only add an extra luxurious layer, but they’re also a washable and breathable design that protects your mattress, too.

I have some questions: My Instagram feed is currently being bombarded by ads for foam mattresses variously branded Ecosa, Simba, Koala etc that can be bought online. They ship to you vacuum packed, you unwrap them and they "inflate" as the air goes back into the foam. Are these any good? What is the difference between these and a conventional mattress?
I'm so fussy with my mattress. It needs to be really firm. If it's too soft, I can't sleep!
