One minute it’s a kitchen and the next it’s a bedroom. A slatted screen that slides across to hide the ‘working’ parts of this compact kitchen is a genius addition.
The rooms are arranged for ease of use. The kitchen leads to a small living room that is followed by the bedroom, then the sauna. The four rooms are identical, but rotated in relation to one another. “There is always a wall on the tallest side and a double window on another side,” says Becker. “These windows are also called ‘summerhouse windows’ in Finland.

However, possibly the home’s best feature is the closet under the mezzanine. Before the renovation, the tenant used to keep her clothes at the entrance on a hanging rail and in stacked boxes. Today, she stores everything in this large custom-made wardrobe. The mirrored doors visually enlarge the space and transform the area under the mezzanine into a small dressing space.

Loft House x2 replaces cars with people. Collaboration between two inner-city neighbours saw their rear-lane parking spaces replaced with conjoined one-bedroom houses. On a footprint of just 35 square metres each, they will serve as both traveller’s accommodation, and a secondary family home.
