Bingo! We started out with a renovation just like this with the architect fully aware of our budget. The quotes from more than one builder came in at $1,500,000+. 18 months later, having reduced the extension to one level, we're holding our breath for the next round of quotes.

Why can't the new and old be more symbiotic - lean into each other more obviously. Put some leadlights in the new and some concrete floors in the old, or something.
