This is our plan also, Denise. Would be interested in hearing your tips, what went right, what near misses you may have, what you wish you had known et al as your project proceeds. We’ve been delayed as partner is currently working, long term, interstate; but that delay has resulted in tweaks to the plans, even though we’d thought we’d been pretty thorough in our initial research. So take your time in the planning stage is waaay up there in my top 10

My six week reno just took 17 weeks. Next time I'll put in a clause for compensation for every week over schedule.
I wasn't prepared for the amount of dust throughout the house and having the reno go so long, the time we have had to put up with the dust.

Jan Dobson, we're learning along the way, but research and backing yourself have been crucial. I've had plenty of time to read up on DOs and DON'TS as we've been in the house over 11 years! Creating mood boards and using the Ideabooks have been great. It's helped me so much to get what's in my head out and be able to share my vision with my husband and with our tradies. It means I just spend time sourcing the looks behind my ideas. Overall this reduces the variations and thus the time / cost. eg, knowing if you want a shower niche before the carpenter rigs up the frame. Pick your appliances out first so you have the dimensions available from the start and you can plan around them.

We had included a new area in our initial design, which included my beloved day bed, but when the quotes came in, that was sacrificed for the budget, but they I realised by rejigging the layout of the living room, that improved the amenity of the overall space. Honestly I'm happier with the outcome and we've saved probably $50K and not impacted our outdoor area. We have a bifold window that connects the indoor / outdoor and are using some offcut Caesarstone from the kitchen to create a proper bar / servery area. Really looking forward to that!

I'm no designer, but I have designed the look and feel for the entire project. This is our forever home so we're not beholden to thinking of resale appeal (although it is fairly neutral black and white based for bathrooms and kitchen). Then it's a matter of working with the builder to achieve the outcomes.

So far so good....
