Room of the Week: A Textured and Tonal Bathroom in Gentle Green
This ensuite's green, charcoal and timber palette packs a punch, while a skylight and frosted glass preserve privacy
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
To create a functional, light-filled bathroom that also found a balance with privacy. We added the skylight and a window looking into the bedroom for light, then we placed the toilet and shower behind the frosted glass for privacy.
The couple wanted a modern, edgy design and colour scheme, but one that was also luxe and wouldn’t date easily.

Key design aspects
Colour palette: We went on quite a journey to get here. The clients wanted a darkish, dramatic colour (seen in the main charcoal-coloured tiles) and timber to bring in some warmth and match the walk-in wardrobe.

Key pieces of furniture/fittings: The feature wall tiles are Light Green Kit Kat tiles, available from Italia Ceramics. The larger charcoal floor and wall tiles are 600 x 600-millimetre New York Coal tiles, available from Signorino Tile Gallery.
The benchtop is Portsea in Grey Marble, while the joinery is Laminex Sublime Teak. Tapware is from Sussex Taps. The bath is Clearwater from Formoso, available from Reece and the skylight is Velux.

Thinking behind the arrangement of fixtures
The vanity is the centrepiece as you enter. The freestanding bath is positioned by the window to the bedroom so you can watch TV (the speaker is over bath). The shower and the toilet are placed behind frosted glass for privacy.

Challenges you worked around
There are no external windows, so we incorporated a large central skylight for light.

Why do you think this room works?
It has wow factor. It is sleek and practical, yet provides some warmth with the incorporation of timber. The clever layout fully utilises the space and there’s great natural light through the skylight. The huge window into bedroom allows for a movie in the bath tub.
