New Ways of Living
If you’re concerned about your ecological footprint and how much natural resources are being used to sustain your everyday life, then think about how your next home project can tread more lightly on the earth with innovative and sustainable products.
“We are definitely in a climate change crisis – look at the recent drought, bushfires and floods – so the time to act is now,” says Clint ‘Wombat‘ Price, 2017 contestant on The Block and ambassador of Eco Town, an educational exhibit at this year’s Brisbane show. “By building and running our homes more sustainably we are reducing the amount of greenhouse emissions and the strain on our earth’s resources,” he says.
Customised new-build materials are being used to design homes that need little maintenance and have great energy efficiency and sustainability. Alternatively, transforming an upcycled shipping container (pictured) into a guest bedroom or home office in the garden will give you the chance to get back to nature without impacting on it.
Downsize to a smaller home.
A movement towards living in smaller homes is gaining traction, as innovative home builders are offering a more energy-efficient, affordable and eco-friendly way to live. Maybe an ideal solution for empty nesters who don’t want to heat masses of empty rooms?

Eco-Friendly Swaps
This year, expect to see a host of innovative additions and features to introduce to your home that will help cut down on consumption, reduce costs and bills, and ultimately help the environment along the way.
The growing popularity of advanced automated systems for the home is taking off, with more Australians investing in smart home tech than ever before, in order to reduce energy, money and ultimately, time. Add to this earth-friendly new designs and additions such as composting toilets, eco-efficient heating and cooling technology and even a space-saving product for air drying clothes (pictured) that has an in-built fan and heater (say goodbye to costly clothes dryer electricity bills!) and it couldn’t be easier to green up your home.

Consider Solar Options
Taking advantage of solar power in sun-drenched Australia is a no-brainer. “It’s becoming easier and cheaper to put solar power into every home,” says Price. By opting for high-quality solar panels and renewable energy options, you’ll be able to convert your home to sustainable energy, ensuring you and the environment are better off.
Indoor solar lighting is also a consideration for clawing back the dollars and energy usage. A multiple glazed skylight is a good option as it reduces heat into the space by 60 per cent, as well as being hail and UV-protected. However, it’s also worth looking out for the latest smart alternative to skylights – solar-powered LEDS. With absolutely no heat produced, no chance of bugs dirtying the glass, and no need for a big hole in the roof, solar-powered skylights will bring ambience to any space.

Sustainable Materials
Whether you’re hunting for a customised vanity, a flooring surface, or benchtops for the kitchen, opting for sustainable materials is key to creating an eco-friendly home. For example, bamboo is not only an incredible versatile and sustainable product, it’s extremely beautiful too, and will add a contemporary vibe to any space.
If timber is your choice, look out for designs finely crafted from reclaimed and salvaged materials sources, such as old buildings, bridges, wharfs and demolition yards. Not only will you be doing your part to save energy, but you’ll also bring buckets of character to your home.
Even your accessories can be environmentally friendly. Wooden chopping boards and platters are a huge trend in hip eateries, so if you’re thinking of buying your own, ensure you pick an eco-friendly, antibacterial option that’s been made in Australia and doesn’t incur the environmental cost of shipping.
