This classic shingle style beach home with its screened porch and guest house create privacy for the rear patio and pool. This Cabot's Semi Transparent Stain over Western Red Cedar Shingles. Color is Pepperwood but would request you get samples and review on your site. Color can vary in different lights due to tree cover, etc.
PRO Smith & Vansant Architects PC Glad you like it, but no the siding is not hardi-board, the siding is red cedar shingles, pre-primed in semi-transparent at the factory in Cabot Beechwood Gray. Then a single coat of Semi-transparent Cabot Pepperwood was applied. The rest of the colors are Benjamin Moore paints. The windows are wood, in "Cottage Red" Ready Mix, not clad aluminum. BM no longer stocks the RM colors, or has them in the new color chips, but they will still mix them. The natural wood doors and rails are stained with Pecan, and sealed with a tung oil product. Most of the ext. trim is BM 1523 Embassy Green. Porch ceilings are BM 2140-40 Storm Cloud Gray.

How long will this shingle dipped in bleaching oil hold this color. Does the oil help hold color vs. natural? Like 3 Comments Hide comments PRO Martin Bros. Contracting, Inc. We are attaching a link to the Cabot website. It gives information on how the bleaching oil works. We hope that it helps. Thank you! http://www.cabotstain.com/products/product/Bleaching-Oil.html
PRO GO LOGIC Thank you! The siding is eastern white cedar. The assembly is a rain screen with the siding attached to 2X2 pressure treated battens. The siding boards are 1X4 with a 1/2” gap reveal. The weather barrier is Solitx fronta quattro - a black building paper made for this type of installation.
Donald Lococo Architects These are Red cedar 18" perfections. They are unstained and unpainted and were this way when photos were taken a few years after construction. Natural cedar weathers differently in different climates and locations. This house in Marthas Vineyard is subject to driving rains and drying winds which affects the color. In other environments, natural shingles can turn a black brown, Researching "Cedar Shingle Weathering" will help explain in more depth. Donald

Paul Moon Design It is a custom dye/stain to make them look like the natural driftwood color once weathered. You can call Cabot customer service and they can advise you how to achieve this look. 2 Likes Save February 6, 2012 at 9:07AM hansjr Great, thanks for the info. I thought it looked like Cabot's Dune Gray but hard to tell in a picture. We have cedar shingles that we will need to re-stain shortly and also use Cabot semi-transparent stains. Do you have a specific contact at Cabot that I could get? It helps to work with the same person if possible. Like Save February 6, 2012 at 10:43AM PRO Paul Moon Design I do not. I would just call the customer service and ask how you make the shingles look like the cape cod houses. It is 1/2 bleach (not dye, I spoke incorrectly) and 1/2 a specific color. Good luck!
staciepelham Was this done recently? I cannot find that color listed on their semi transparent stains on their website. It looks like Shelby gray or Silverstone are the closest matches. Like Save April 18, 2017 at 7:28PM PRO Glenn Layton Homes This project was completed in late 2015. The owner had some replacement shingles sent recently so I assume the color is still available. You may want to call them directly. Like Save April 19, 2017 at 5:29AM

I read an earlier post stating that the color is a custom mix of Dune Gray and Beechwood Grey Cabot stain. Is this semi-transparent, or semi-solid? I have read elsewhere that many contractors are not happy with the durability of the semi-solid Cabot stain. What is your opinion on this?
Point One Architects This house used white cedar shingles with bleaching oil. It sounds like your house may have red cedar shingles. In which case you may try using a solid body stain to change the color to grey. NOTE: Red cedar naturally turns brown and black, not grey.
