I love a good upside-down house, & this is one of the best!

Yes, the redesign comes at significant cost here - correcting the wrongs the original design - & some people may grumble about carrying the groceries upstairs, but the benefits are huge!

Coming from a home with cold, dark, poorly ventilated living areas - as it's the case with many terrace houses - to a home with light filled living areas, that will be warm in winter, & will capture cooling breezes in summer.

Moving bedrooms downstairs, where they can be dark & cool (most people sleep comfortably at around 18C).

As Australian cities increase their densities, & the once forgotten terrace house is looked at again, we need to build better terraces. That are comfortable to live in, & energy efficient. Light & bright! Aspect is so important here, when access to light is diminished by two party walls. Passive solar design must really be used as we move forward. An inverted home is such a great solution for terrace housing, as is making the most of the stairwell (with a sneaky, new north facing clerestory window, not really shown here), using it as a light well throughout the home.

I do worry that such a large skylight may overheat the home in summer. At least it looks like it angled quite steeply to the south, somewhat limiting the hot summer sun from the north. Though I also hope it doesn't leak too much heat in winter, as even the best skylights insulate nowhere near as well as an insulated roof.

I like the amount of space created. I'm a bit unsure about that skylight, it was 42C yesterday in Melbourne, savagely hot, and we tend to get a few of days like that now so without some kind of retractable weather barrier I'm not a fan in this instance. Good attention to detail overall and I'm sure the owners will enjoy it.
