This once four-bedroom apartment in Mumbai, India, needed some breathing room and spaces where its three generations of family could get together and relax. The clients also wanted the home’s decor to reflect their sophisticated, cosmopolitan tastes, so they turned to Prashant Chauhan, creative director of Zero9.

Built in 2018, the home opens up to a bright, spacious living/dining room. A large mustard-yellow sofa, paired with an armchair and a trio or round tables, makes for a comfortable space.
“The balcony is enhanced with large sliding doors that allow plenty of light inside,” says Chauhan. “Plants are used to add life to the area and to make the living room visually more spacious.”

Intriguing little elements are sprinkled across the room to add a touch of whimsy to the space. “The owners trusted us completely with the furniture and furnishings, knowing it’s our forte. Most of the decor pieces and seaters are made by the Zero9 team,” says Chauhan.
A large grid of clear glass and metal separates the living room from the lounging area. “We added this to keep visual connectivity between spaces,”he says.

The lounging area
The lounging area and study room has a daybed, a swing seat and an off-centre moon artwork. The design of the rooms is deliberately minimal for a cosy vibe.
“The moon print on the larger-than-life canvas is actually a photograph taken by me,” says Chauhan. “Visually, this room is the largest space in the house, thanks to the glass grid that allows long sightlines. Also, this room is connected to the balcony, so it has more moving around space.”

The kitchen is striking, designed in black stone and beige back-painted glass. It is also very functional, with plenty of storage.
The guest bedroom
The guest bedroom is a soft, soothing space. “We used big windows to allow more light in and make the room look larger. A small niche was created behind the bed as an accent feature for the room,” says Chauhan.

The master bedroom has a smart, sophisticated vibe, thanks to the bold blue wall paint with a textured pattern. The wardrobes with mirror fronts make the room look more spacious.
“The maple bed and the fabulous atomic wall art from Spacio make for the key features of this room. We chose wooden flooring to help the furniture blend in, thereby giving the room a seamless look,” says Chauhan.
