We’ve seen Australia suffering with drought this last year and with that comes the essential restrictions on our water consumption. We know it needs to be done, but let’s face it, it’s not ideal, especially when the temperatures are soaring, the grass is looking a bit worse for wear, and everyone needs cooling down.
Luckily, there are ways we can do our bit to help with this, one of which is by installing a water tank. *In 2018, Houzz saw nearly one-in-ten of AU renovating homeowners installing a rainwater harvesting system, which includes water tanks. It makes sense – and whether it’s something you’ve never considered before or you do have one but would like to know how you can update it with smart technology, we’ve got the answers.

Why Get a Water Tank?
There are lots of reasons why including a water tank should be on your to-do list this year. The first, and maybe the most obvious, is that it’s going to help you store rainfall, which can then be used for toilet flushing, gardening, laundry and topping up your swimming pool. So, the saved rainwater isn’t just useful for outdoor use, it can benefit your home inside too.
That leads nicely on to the fact that having a water tank can help you save on having to use mains water.
Finally, there are the eco credentials, as the more people with water tanks, the less pressure there is on dam supplies in drier months. And with sustainable water management such a huge challenge right now, that’s a big bonus straight away. A water tank can also add to the resale value of your home. We’re starting to see a rise in sustainability being a huge drawcard for potential buyers.
Did you know? A home with a 100-square-metre roof catchment that captures about 1,400 litres of rainwater, will have more than enough water for 200 full toilet flushes!

Things You’ll Need to Consider
So how simple is it to install a water tank? Well, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s not only easy, but it’s also a quick and hassle-free process, which can begin as soon as you determine what type of tank you need and the size of your catchment area.
Leading Australian water tank manufacturers Kingspan have come up with an easy way to help you find your perfect tank, in the shape of their online Size-a-lator tool, which matches the right tank to your needs and available space. In just six steps, you can design your own corrugated steel water tank, complete with a pump and other accessories.
Once you’ve looked at the available space you have, it will help you decide which space tank is best suited to your space. There are four different shapes – and colours – to choose from, including a sleek slimline design with rounded edges, which is ideal for homes with tight spaces. And the great news is that the online tool only takes around a minute to use and shows you how much rainwater you will be likely to use and collect – genius!
Did you know? An 11-litre full-flush toilet uses up to 65,700 litres of water and a 4.5 star-rated washing machine uses 6,318 litres!

Track Your Rainwater With an App
We’ve seen smart home technology leading the way, with everything from remote heating and lighting to ovens that remember how you like your food cooked – and now water tanks are getting in on the action. A new smart app from Kingspan (pictured) allows you to keep track of how your tank is performing and look at how much rainwater you’re consuming, from wherever you happen to be.
The app tracks rain flow into the tank, as well as your usage, so you can decide if you want to empty the tank (when you’re due another rainfall) and monitor your rainwater usage rate. Plus, it will alert you if you’re tank is becoming low on water. Essentially, you’re becoming connected to rainfall.
Did you know? Rainwater harvesting is the most accessible source of clean urban water in the world so make sure you choose a tank that meets Australian standards for storage of drinking water.
