no loose pebbles on the walkway - I get too OCD about things like that and would spend all day carefully plucking them out of the flower bed and brushing them off the pavers
Q
Photo
like the layering of greens across shades and heights mixed with flowering shrubs (skip the English country esate fountain)
Q
Photo
nope, it's very pretty and I like the way the boxwood blends into the flower beds, but it's too frou-frou (and maybe only looks good 2-3 weeks in the spring?)
Q
Photo
like the grasses and the mix of greenery.
Q
Photo
moss is nice -- it's soft and suggests time/history

I do love seasonal colors that come naturally and perennially - fruit trees, azaleas/rhodies, lilacs/viburnums, iris, etc. (not color that is forced through a rotation of annuals and re-planting).
Q
Photo
No no no!
Q
Photo
saw this from a different season and perspective. lovely use of a small space
Q
Photo
a small inobstrusive fountain? cool. could be incorporated with some flow.
Q
Photo
looks lush and thick
Q
Photo
too much rock - looks forced and artificial
Q
Photo
like the sense of enclosure, the layers and the contrast of hard lines below and loose folliage above

if the garage were just a normal 2-car garage I'd be interested in a separate structure w/ seating area (and shade) but we just don't have the space given the land taken by garage and parking pad.
Q
Photo
like a lot here: the collection of greens and the maple, the walk, the snow catcher. don't like the pyramid shaped shrubs for some reason - feels artificial (granted all sorts of pruning and tying are also artificial but they look natural) and I prefer horizontal over vertical
Q
Photo
always liked the horizontal decking and steps of japanese tea houses.
again steppers in grass seem to provide functionality while transitioning from the geometric structure of the house to looser shapes that might be in the garden
Q
Photo
love the bulk and stability of japanese arches and would be happy to consider some structural elements of the design to support plants and/or provide shade but this particular execution would look out of place - must work with the house.

Heather loves running water (grew up on the coast). I wouldn't go all in on a fountain like this, and probably wouldn't go for a koi pond due to maintenance issues, but could get behind something else like a rainwater retention pond
Q
Photo
love the iris the maple and the rounded bushes in the background. the pagoda thing is dreadful but I'd be fine with a more classically designed "snow catcher"
Q
Photo
haha I've always wanted a tatami mat room :) not looking for a rock garden but I appreciate the serenity of this scene
Q
Photo
like that fluffy grass against the rock; the other planting in the foreground looks too sparse. Like the view in the background - very green, different shapes, pop of japanese maple (or is that an azalea?)
Q
Photo
love white flowers
Q
Photo
like the stepping stones and like how the shed/garage is incorporated into the design
Q
Photo
I've always loved new england cottage gardens (and English gardens) but don't think this style suits our house
Q
Photo
Nope! way too pretentious for a private residence.
Q
Photo
like the clean lines of the deck and patio but not the gravel/stone pattern that feels contrived (and could be messy if stones kick up)
feels cozy. bench by firepit provides seating without visually walling off the garden from the patio
lovely if we had a hill...
