Room of the Week: A White, Light-Filled Kitchen With Pops of Sage
See how a light, bright and contemporary kitchen renovation works in a period Edwardian home
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
My client wanted a light and bright kitchen, one that was timeless and fitted within the overall style of the house. We opted for a ‘classic contemporary’ style, specifying Polytec Shaker-style cabinets in Classic White and simple chrome handles.
We were careful not to go ultra-modern or too classic with the material choices as we wanted a blend that respected the architecture of the home, yet refreshed and modernised the space for living and enjoyment. The solid Tasmanian oak floors laid throughout the home added warmth and a beautiful foundation to build upon.
A budget-friendly quartz-blend benchtop by Caesarstone in Snow was selected and soft sage-green subway tiles in gloss were used to add depth and subtle personality, inspired by the outdoor greenery in the garden. Chrome fittings and fixtures were kept consistent throughout the entire home, lending itself to a more classic and timeless approach.

Starting point
The starting point was the stunning period features of the Edwardian home, including decorative cornices, timberwork, and stained-glass windows.
The kitchen is the heart of this home in the open-plan living/dining floor plan. We wanted to create a timeless classic-contemporary blend for the overall look and feel of the home, which guided the colour and material selection.

Why do you think this room works?
This room presents a timeless and functional kitchen that makes a subtle statement while paying homage to the existing architecture of the home, picking up on the beautiful green of the home’s garden surrounds. The kitchen is light, bright but not stark or lacking personality. It presents a wonderful spot to cook, entertain, and gather and a style that will stand the test of time. We’ve managed to breathe new life into the space, yet retain the character of this very pretty Edwardian home.
