CHW: pulls for bathroom vanity. 6". This is our favorite within your allowances. You need 6. https://www.build.com/product/summary/1212637?uid=4089941&jmtest=gg-gbav2_4089941&inv=1&ds_rl=1275595&source=gg-gba-pla_4089941!c15146996781!a128720259785!dc!ng&ds_rl=1275595&gclid=Cj0KCQiAosmPBhCPARIsAHOen-PLhfT-tnwhqzodbcP7gGlU7GevyOf50qEd_DptME4yJ54QVT5Hwq4aAhxqEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds
SY: Regarding the office fan, there are two theories about color: white to go away, or black to tie to the grounding black elements in the room. I prefer the latter, myself, shown here. Did you find an alternative fan to the Minka Aire we found? I don't want to sink any more time into it, as we've all noted that the light on it, though integrated LED, is not a necessary light anyway, given the cans we've placed around it. JG: Ok I'm sold on black! Eoban is checking on the alternative as we like the fan in our living room so if they have the right size we might like that but otherwise the Minka is probably fine
SY: White or black Minka Air 48" fan with integrated LED. There aren't many that fit the specifications we need, but these do the trick! E+J We are undecided on the color, might depend on the rest of the decor. What do you mean by "fit the specifications we need"? Something technical?. Also forgot about the phillips hue thing here as well. Would like a replaceable bulb if possible (less important since this light would be less about mood lighting) https://www.lumens.com/pure-led-ceiling-fan-by-minka-aire-fans-MAFP346347.html?cgid=90&dwvar_MAFP346347_AttrValue1=Flat%20White%20with%20Flat%20White%20Blades
JG: Would one of these fit well in my office? She just opened up more orders so I'd like to snag one if it would work https://www.etsy.com/listing/1138625545/moonwake-lamp-walnut. SY: just as a desk / occassional lamp? Sure. Check out https://www.surclewood.com/shop for locally made lamps like this. :)
SY: thinking about your floating shelves in the office (white) and mudroom (wood) and behind the toilet (white). I like these brackets that appear to float. (They mount above the shelf rather than below, so are hidden behind the things on the shelves.) J: I love these! https://www.etsy.com/listing/784050022/iron-floating-j-metal-shelf-bracket?click_key=6c255b403a6169c2a72748fc93a72c755a76f5a6%3A784050022&click_sum=e624f80e&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=shelf+brackets+black&ref=sr_gallery-1-5&organic_search_click=1&pop=1
SY: I tried colorful hooks in your mudroom back when I found these while I was doing prelim design, but liked black best! These seem great: sturdy, multi hooks. J: looks good to me. We have some other hooks in the house that have a similar shape with two hooks on each and they've worked out well. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1036002987/the-hook-model-2?click_key=47f825bdb50a32fa8e3ccc03f022d17a7b008b7d%3A1036002987&click_sum=25718263&rec_type=ss&ref=landingpage_similar_listing_top-1&frs=1&sts=1&variation0=2257788151
415 lumens (60w bulb) incandescent. The cylindrical options (that shine outward at your face as they should) seem to be mostly LED. https://www.lumens.com/destin-wall-sconce-by-savoy-house-SVHP268225.html?cgid=505&dwvar_SVHP268225_AttrValue1=Matte%20Black#prefn1=Light%20Source&prefv1=Incandescent&prefn2=StandardFinish&prefv2=Black&tileIndex=16 E: don't really like the 45° square/diamond mount
1600 lumens LED. https://www.lumens.com/lochwood-led-wall-sconce-by-kuzco-lighting-KUZP266535.html?cgid=505&dwvar_KUZP266535_AttrValue1=Black&dwvar_KUZP266535_AttrValue2=Medium#prefn1=BulbColorTemperature&prefv1=2700K%20Warm%20White%7C3000K%20Soft%20White&prefn2=StandardFinish&prefv2=Black%7CBronze&tileIndex=19 E: bathroom lights must have replaceable bulbs.
SY: exterior sconces. 250 lumens but doesn't shine right in your eyes in the dark of night. J: Would like to have something that is compatible with phillips hue bulbs (i.e. replaceable bulb, it sounds like this has an "integrated LED"). E: Would prefer a more cylindrical shape (personal preference + a little more classic to the house) We both appreciate the downward light. https://www.build.com/product/s1764853?uid=4167661.
SY: I think this is my favorite for your bathroom sconces! A bit more interesting than the super simple version, and a bit more refined than the cutesy version. E+J: Neither of us like this one sorry! :p https://mitzi.com/Product/H281301-OB. Height: 12.25" Width: 6.75" Material: Steel Backplate: 4.75" Backplate Shape: Round Hang Only As Pictured Shade Material: Glass Shade Color: Opal Shade Height: 5.63" Shade Diameter: 6.75" Socket: (1) E26 Medium Base Bulbs: 1 Wattage: 60w each
SY: a fun touch here! I'm leaning away from this, however, because it's reaching the tipping point with your floor tile and this cute detailing both. https://mitzi.com/Product/H193301-OB. Height: 11" Width: 6.25" Weight: 3 lbs. Material: Steel Backplate: 4.75" Backplate Shape: Round Backplate Height: 0.5" Wall Mount Only Shade Material: Glass Shade Color: Opal Glossy Shade Height: 5.75" Bulbs: 1 Wattage: 60w each
SY: nice and simple. Not wrong. :) J: I prefer this of the three globe types E: Would prefer more of a cylinder shape https://mitzi.com/Product/H105101-OB. Height: 11.5" Width: 7.25" Weight: 3 lbs. Material: Steel Backplate: 4.5" Backplate Shape: Round Wall Mount Only Shade Material: Glass Shade Color: White Shade Height: 6.75" Shade Diameter: 3" Socket: (1) E26 Medium Base Bulbs: 1 Wattage: 60w each
vintage/found chest in hall EB: I really like all of these.
SY: I was thinking. That storage unit that used to be pull out trash and recycling. Now that it is not that anymore, it could be anything - including, like the piece under your open shelves in your office, a found piece. Thoughts on that? I'm asking now because we have to reach out to a cabinet maker to get a cost on your vanity, and I was going to include this piece (and ask you if you had thought yet about what it might store) ... EB: I agree a standalone / found / vintage piece would be excellent for that location. So, I'm assuming no need to include w/ cabinetmaker quote? JG: agree
SY: is your disco ball a light? just a disco ball? we are wondering if maybe it goes in the hall rather than the bath... talk to us more about your disco ball please. :) JG: ok 1) not a light 2) it’s currently in my office could be an alternate place and 3) it’s quite old looks fine in my crummy office now, but imagining it in a totally shiny new addition I think either we don’t need to feature it too heavily or I have an excuse to get a new disco ball :) SY: GOT IT
SY: Screen Inspo
SY: Timbertech Edge Prime+ collection - Coconut Husk color
SY: 4x4 tile inspo - wall and side of tub, with pivoting glass and black hardware
SY: I can get you a 72" vanity! Which I feel very happy about, and think you will too! My question is about sink(s). Do you want two for sure, or could you have one, with two faucets? In a 72" vanity we can get you two sinks, no problem. But sometimes we put in one longer central trough-like sink, with two faucets. I know you don't love surface mount as shown in this image, so it would still be undermount, but this gives you the idea. Thoughts on one, maybe 36" wide sink with two faucets and 18" of counter on each side of counter, vs. two 20" sinks with 32" divided up between them and on the ends? JG: i definitely prefer one sink with more uninterrupted counter space on the ends. EB: i agree with jessika. SY: you got it.
SY: single central trough sink, two faucets - but undermount, not surface mount as shown.
SY: we didn't see a grill on your deck. Just a table for eating and some lounge furniture. Is that the function you need in that space? Any hopes and dreams for us to accommodate on the deck? JG that would be lovely. It’s hard to find a level spot in our yard for our charcoal weber. Moo likes to sit on the deck railing (which is currently about 4 inches, but he could use 6). I like built in benches, spots for potted plants. We have a spot for the trash cans on the west side which is nice. SY: ok. And eating? Lounging? How many seats for each activity?
SY: this image just to ask how much EB nixes all brass and/or JG deeply desires brass. I would do plumbing in polished chrome or black, and most accessories too... but just want to know if I should consider a pop of brass or absolutely not. :) JG: no need for brass, black and chrome are great! EB: no brass please JG: i know it’s about the metal but i think the rest of this is really cute SY: got it. no brass. and yes, JG, I wouldn't put pictures in front of you that you wouldn't like. :) I think I've internalized your style now.
SY: simple affordable white tile, installed staggered (not stacked) and with a dark gray grout... but a little different / hipper than 3x6" subway tile.
SY: you have, based on my photos, a hodgepodge of interior doors? But you do have one like this, which looks most like the era of the house. This is a good time to update the doors - or at least choose the new ones in the addition to be the style you want to go in. Is this a good direction? EB: yes; simple and classic. fits with the house's original doors. JG: agree
SY: We need a cat door in the wall going into the litter / broom closet area. How about a little hole like this? Kinda sweet. EB: yep, I like that. JG: *thumbs up*
SY: can you please share with me the paint colors in the kitchen, dining, and living? Thank you! JG: Since we're away I can't say for sure (will check old cans when we're back) but I think kitchen is possibly Amalfi from Sherwin Williams HGTV. That seems a little too dark when looking online though. And the other ones are something like Web Grey and Magnetic Grey from a similar SW collection. I do know for sure our whites are Greek Villa.
SY: do you know the gals at Siosi? They are local furniture builders (siosidesign.com) who make beautiful things. We have a nice long bench - 60" or so - in your new mudroom design. Shoes can go beneath, hooks above, under the window. They customize, but for comparison, this is their "Shortcut Bench" which is 52" x 14" for $680 in white oak. Thoughts about that level of investment in a piece like that for something lovely and local ... but, granted, in a mudroom. EB: I like Siosi but too much money. JG: I also adore Siosi but would rather save up to get one of their pieces elsewhere in the house some other time.
SY: Talk to me about sink faucets. Do you have preferences about 1) wall mount versus countertop mount? 2) one handle or two? JG: I prefer single handle but think two handle is cuter. Unsure about countertop vs wall mount. EB: two-handle feels more classic to me. wall-mount would be interesting and I imagine could save a little space / be easier to clean, although sounds like a more complex install than countertop.
SY: We could carve niches in the wall and mount mirrors on hinges on top, or try something like this West Elm Seamless Medicine cabinet from West Elm - fully recessed. Seems you'd rather have medicine cabinets than full wall of mirror, yes? EB: I really like the idea of a recessed cabinet — certainly seems more space-efficient and elegant. This particular mirror I don't like that much (not a fan of the brass/gold color personally). JG: yes to medicine cabinet, and I like the size and shape of the mirror.
SY: simple (=affordable) but bold and bright here. And this color scheme would flow beautifully from your kitchen. JG: I really really love this SY: nice, ok. SY: bringing up the top bathroom color / overall aesthetic images to the top of the board for you to revisit! I just need to hear which strikes you as your favorite feel / what specifically you would be into or not into - just about the aesthetic/color scheme. EB: I like black grout; simple subway tile is OK by me (and I appreciate its simplicity), although it'd be fun to try something a little more unique. The teal color I like.
SY: coming back to the idea of colorful floor (though not red wall). You didn't love the colors in the next image - but what about these (shapes and colors?). EB: too many different colors to me. JG: same
SY: tile! JG: I don't like the particular mix of colors but do like the overall idea SY: ok, good to know! I was thinking these colors pulled in your blues well and also transitioned to other colors. But I hear you. SY: Do you like the large hex shape? EB; I like the hex shape of the tile, not the color though.
SY: this image has been sitting in my own personal inspo files for a while for a bathroom reno at my house.... JG: this reminds me that we'll likely want a toilet that has a built in bidet. SY: oh, great! will note that. SY: colors and shapes on this floor?
SY: tile, tub & partial glass divider...? JG: I think I'm into it! I love the little ledge. I've never used a shower with that kind of enclosure so I hope it wouldn't be splashy? SY: yep, that's the main thing. it's obviously spashier than a full glass ... though a full glass on a tub can be annoying. Stay tuned for more on this. I assume you'd prefer glass to curtain generally? JG: generally yes, curtains get gross easily EB: I'd rather have some kind of glass than a curtain. Also, I think I'm one of those people that doesn't really care if the bathroom floor gets wet. I mean, it's a bathroom. SY: agree! it will be tiled. But these doors really are fine unless you're having a raucous party in the shower. :) SY: we could be colorful but more simple / less cacophonous, like this. Thoughts on color and pattern and overall aesthetic effect here?
SY: I wouldn't do a direct translation of this for you - might lose the wallpaper, and (if we can't get a vintage tub) put the orange on the vanity - but as a feel/color scheme, what do you think? JG: Agree
SY: does this scheme appeal? I think it'd be a great tie-in to the blues out in the public spaces.... JG: the green rug is really throwing me off, I like the tile though
JG I love all the tile, the big mirror, the faucet is cool without being too obnoxious. EB: I like almost everything in this image. This is the kind of tub I'd prefer too. SY: this is high contrast but obv more neutral. I'd love to do more color than this if you're open to it? JG: more color is good! I think just having more than 3 or so different colors felt busy compared to our usual aesthetic
SY: fun tile here, no? and plants on the shower window sill. EB: I like high-contrast patterned tile like this for sure.
SY: not the pink (because EB thumbs down it, but also because I think it doesn't flow as well from the public spaces' colors) but the gradient application of tile.... JG: fun detail! SY: simpler tile, high black-white contrast, still colorful. thoughts on this? (but in different colors)
JG I like the tile, backsplash, fixtures. SY: you have fun taste.
JG nice colors, light fixture floating shelves SY: agree
JG I like the mirror and wallpaper SY: cute
JG: I have this poster (not in my current office space because there's no where for it to go but I would move it into new office). 18" W x 24" H in a black frame. In person the green is more like a blue with green tins and the yellow is a little more deep gold. SY: got it, thank you! Leslie is back and we're moving forward with the decorating now on an addition model!
JG: I love an unexpectedly funky bathroom and want to keep that on the table :p We have a disco ball that could go in there. SY: I AM 100% ON BOARD WITH THIS
JG: Would love space for plants in the shower! I like the little shelf by the tub and the hooks for towels/robes within reach. SY: nice! plants would love living in a moist bright space like this
JG: cute, compact, PLANTS!, the sink has a bit of storage while still being small. SY: got it, sweet.
JG: clean, fresh, symmetrical/lines. SY: great plant solution - would you combine your plants with some other storage/display? JG: I'm open to distrbuting them among other decor
JG: idk it's just cute SY: agree, very inviting and bright
Sliding doors for office
JG: I want one of the rugs from this seller on Etsy for my office. I like a ton of the rugs so idk which but FYI as I'll need to think about color/style/size that works with the space https://www.etsy.com/listing/929247821/designer-minimalism-minerals-series SY: got it thank you
EB: I just like this because it looks easy to clean. The in-wall toilet is neat too.
EB: I like toilets like this because I hate cleaning behind toilets. SY: 100%
JG: cool vibe https://www.instagram.com/p/CQo0I7aHdfd/ SY: right? We love her work.
SY: if we do this in a window in your office, you probably wouldn't do a window treatment. Is that ok by you? I'm thinking of a window that faces east. And you'd be walking by it between your bed and bathroom. JG: I think I'm ok with that! We used to have a very poorly DIY'd version of this where my desk currently is. SY: ok, noted!
