Baby, it’s cold outside! Winter is well and truly upon us – a time for layering up the warm woollies and creating your own fun indoors. Make this chilly season one to remember by cooking up all your favourite comfort foods, relaxing by the fire, entertaining alfresco, and enjoying long and leisurely soaks in a hot bath.
We spoke to the team at Australian Gas Networks (AGN) to find how natural gas can help turn your home into the cosy and welcoming retreat you crave in the cooler months, and why gas is a perennial favourite among home builders and renovators.

Cook up a storm
When it’s freezing outside, there’s nothing quite like staying in and enjoying time with your favourite people – cook up a storm, play board games and put your feet up by the fireplace.
Trying to work out which fuel type is best for your kitchen? Take a tip from professional chefs and opt for natural gas. “Nothing compares with the instant heat and precise temperature control you get with natural gas,” says Larry Sutter, an AGN gas connections representative. “Having a flame you can see also makes it easier to gauge exactly how much power you’re cooking with compared with electric alternatives.”
And let’s not forget that mouth-watering charred and smoky flavour on meat and vegetables that you can only get when cooking over an open flame.

Stay cosy & comfortable
When it comes to heating your home, there are many different options to choose from – natural gas central heating, portable natural gas heating, reverse-cycle air conditioning, portable electric heaters, wood-burning fireplaces and more.
While reverse-cycle air conditioning has the advantage of offering both heating and cooling, it tends to dry out the air, creating a less than ideal indoor atmosphere.
Flued natural gas heating, on the other hand, heats the air without drying it out, so your family stays comfortably warm and safe. “Gas is a powerful energy source that heats your home fast and creates a cosy and comfortable atmosphere,” says Sutter.

Create an irresistible focal point
A fabulous fireplace can be the making of a room, creating an instant focal point and a natural gathering point for friends and family. Plus, there’s nothing quite like coming in from the cold and curling up in front of the fireplace, mug of hot chocolate (or a glass of red) in hand.
The main options are wood-burning and gas fires. A natural gas fireplace is high on many homeowners’ wish lists, and it’s easy to see the appeal; they provide instant heat and ambience at the touch of a button, you can set the temperature and, unlike wood-burning fires, there’s zero mess or fuss. “If you’re looking to add atmosphere to your home but don’t like the idea of having to source firewood or sweep out a messy firebox, a gas log fireplace is the way to go,” says Sutter.

Soak up the warmth
On those freezing cold mornings, the last thing you want is to run out of hot water when you’re in the middle of showering. With a natural gas continuous-flow system, you never will. These units heat the water as you use it, so they can cope with extra-large households, deep baths and those who like to indulge in marathon-length showers.
Continuous-flow – or tankless – hot water units are generally more economical to run than storage systems as there is no wasted energy storing water at high temperatures 24/7, especially if you choose a system boasting a seven-star energy rating. Plus their compact size means they won’t clutter up your outdoor area.
Natural gas burns fast at extremely hot temperatures, making it a very efficient way to heat water. If a storage tank is the right option for your home, the heat recovery for gas is much faster than electricity. Some models also feature mains-pressure delivery, which means they can service multiple bathrooms with high pressure simultaneously – ideal for those busy mornings when everyone is getting ready at the same time.

Barbecue whenever you want
Backyard barbecues with friends and family are what weekends are all about. But there’s nothing worse than discovering you’ve run out of bottled gas when tummies are rumbling and you’re just as you’re about to toss those steaks or veggies on the barbie.
When you connect your barbecue to natural gas, you’ll never have to worry about the tank running empty again. Plus, it means no more heavy and bulky gas bottles to lug home from the shops or spare bottles cluttering up your tidy deck.

Entertain outdoors year-round
There’s no reason alfresco entertaining season has to end when autumn arrives – install an outdoor gas fireplace on your deck or terrace, and you can use your outdoor area all year round. Plus, there’s something truly magical about cosying up on the sofa outdoors around the warm glow of a gas fire – it’s the perfect spot to create those memories with family and friends you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
“Outdoor living has become a key focus over the past 10 years for those building or renovating a home – it’s all about creating inviting outdoor spaces that can be enjoyed whatever the season,” says Sutter. “Spending so much time at home over the last year has also made people see the many benefits of having that extra outdoor room. Decent outdoor heating is essential if you plan to use the area in winter. If you’re not ready to take the plunge with a built-in gas fireplace, a natural gas outdoor heater is a great alternative.” You’ll never want the chilly season to end!
