Before & After: A Teen Bathroom Gets a Cool Coastal Makeover
Out with the middle-of-the-room shower, poor layout and dodgy drainage; and in with a chic and functional new bathroom
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
The bathroom before works.
Brief
Our clients wanted a fun, funky and functional new bathroom for their two teenagers. They wanted better drainage and to stop mould from growing around the freestanding bath area.
The biggest goal was to make the bathroom feel larger. The space was great, but it was poorly designed, with features such as a shower in the middle of the room.

My client was concerned about having another freestanding bath and water accumulating, so we opted for a drop-in bath with a hob. This meant we needed to install a combined bath/shower, which saved us a lot of space that we could then use for more storage in a new custom vanity.

The new floor plan.
Starting point
As the property was so close to the beach, I thought it would be fitting to create a coastal feel. This was a big driver for our selections, such as the terrazzo slab for the vanity top and the custard-coloured basins, which are reflective of golden sand.
I included a curve on one corner of the vanity to create more space for people to get in and out of the bath.
We couldn’t remove the heavy black-framed windows, so we worked with them instead. Black tapware ties in with the black windows, without overpowering the space.

What was the budget?
Around AU$60,000.
Where did most of it go?
The bespoke joinery was expensive, which was to be expected. The labour, such as the tile laying, was very costly too.

Tell us about the vanity under-lighting?
Soft lighting recessed under the vanity creates a very luxe feeling and makes for a cost-effective night light. It also softens the look of the large vanity.

What was your thinking behind the layout?
With a long narrow bathroom, it’s always best to locate key usage areas at the ends and along the longest side of the space. This way, I was able to make the bathroom look twice its original size.

What’s in the new palette?

What do you think made the biggest difference?
A few things: the improved layout, the timber-look ceramic tiles, which warmed up the space and gave it structure, and the pendants and mirrors that created the look of a cool salon.
Plus, the minimalist black tapware, which ties in with the black-framed windows. And of course, the joinery. I loved all the ingredients!

Which Houzz Pro features did you find the most useful for this project?
For me, it’s always the Mood Board creator [previously called Room Boards]. To be able to gather images, pricing and all relevant details and house them on the one platform is so time-saving.
