Feel-Good Home: 10 Steps to a Feng Shui Bedroom
Balance your dream zone and improve your sleep by adopting these key principles
Feng shui is the art of arranging your environment to attract more positive energy into your home and life. And seeing as we spend about a third of our lives sleeping, the bedroom is considered one of the most important areas of the home to get right.
For many of us, applying every one of the feng shui principles to the bedroom isn’t an easy task. Often, we’re forced to work with the set size, shape or layout of a room we’ve inherited. But if you’re lucky enough to be planning a new home design, renovation or extension, consider this to be your own personal feng shui checklist.

2. Clear your clutter
When there is clutter in the bedroom, it’s thought to reflect disorganisation and a lack of focus in your own personal life and relationships. For example, don’t store clothes in your wardrobe that no longer fit. Also, make sure your dressing table is clear of empty or unused bottles and containers – it is believed that replenishing your supplies dispels feelings of loneliness. Finally, remove unread books, rubbish bins, notebooks and anything associated with work.

3. Opt for black accents
Surprisingly, black can be used in a feng shui bedroom because it’s known as the yin which can absorb all colours. In saying that, though, it should only be used as an accent colour and not as a feature. Try to avoid using red or orange in the bedroom as they are too mentally stimulating.

4. Flip the switch
Keep electrical devices to a minimum in the bedroom or, better yet, store everything you have – your radio, mobile phone, TV, iPad/tablet, laptop, chargers and so on – in another room. Opt for a battery-operated radio and, if you can’t live without your electric blanket during winter, make sure you unplug it at the wall before you climb into bed. When you have electrical devices operating in the bedroom, you are essentially sleeping in a magnetic field. Remember, the idea of applying feng shui principles to your bedroom is to improve your sleep, not disturb it.

5. Place your mirrors
Mirrors should be placed where they cannot be seen from the bed. The same applies to mirrored tiles because they ‘break up’ the image, and therefore the relationship, reflected in them. If you do sleep with a mirror in your room, cover it with a piece of fabric when you go to bed. Mirrored wardrobes definitely aren’t good feng shui and are worth reconsidering if you want a balanced room.

6. Balance the elements
Furnishings at either side of the bed don’t have to be identical, just balanced. Bedside lamps and tables should be of equal height, size and proportion.

7. Choose your colour
The top hues to use in the bedroom include purple (vitality), pink (purity), blue (soothing) and green (harmony).

8. Check under your bed
It’s important to keep the space under your bed clear. It is a Chinese belief that having clutter under your bed means you are sleeping on the issues you’re not willing to face.

9. Think about the position and placement of the bed
Sleep with the head of the bed placed against a wall for support as this reinforces your sense of security. The best position for the bed is thought to be diagonally opposite the door with an unobstructed view to the door. Try to avoid positioning the bed between the door and the window, or between two windows.

10. Consider the materials used
Ideally, beds should be made of natural materials, such as wood or bamboo, and raised above the floor so that air can circulate underneath. Always purchase new pillows when moving into a new house as they represent new beginnings and are symbolic of leaving your old problems behind.

Your bedroom is predominately a place of rest, rejuvenation and romance, and it should be filled with mostly yin (female passive energy), the opposite of yang energy. You can create this by choosing colours, furnishings, materials and lighting that have a calming effect on your mood. Use decor that soothes rather than distracts – ideally soft colours, mood lighting and rounded furniture made of wood and bamboo.
