For a small space, the bathroom is quite a prominent feature of the home and takes up a sizeable chunk of the renovation budget. Once you’ve found your signature style, it’s easier to select fittings and materials that bring your vision to life and offer the most convenient ways for you and your family to start and finish the day in comfort. Take a look at these clever bathrooms to see which one ‘speaks’ to you.

Mid-Century Modern. Do you like to get in and out of the bathroom without fuss, but still appreciate a few special touches that personalise a space? Mid-century Modern decor could do the trick. A moody colour palette, luxe tiled feature wall and streamlined built-in shelving caters for those who want polished functionality and simplicity.

Rustic. If you like nothing better than vintage finds and a relaxing soak in an old-fashioned tub you’ll be right at home in a Rustic bathroom. Ideal for placement in an older property, Rustic appeal can be established or maintained with the retention of rough natural surfaces such as brick or sandstone interior walls or panels that once housed a fireplace, a standalone bathtub, unassuming timber vanity, simple window treatments and the use of subdued neutrals for walls.

Timber interior features are trending in many Aussie homes as a way to bring the outdoors in and create a calm, airy space which feels bigger than it is. Here, the clean lines of light timber cabinetry define the room, and the inclusion of a charmingly imperfect hand-hewn footstool is a splendid finishing touch to make the room look lived in.

Industrial. Are you an practical type who prefers a fuss-free environment with humble materials? Do you enjoy finding and repurposing unwanted objects? A no-nonsense, utilitarian approach to the bathroom would result in an Industrial look that showcases timber and metal in unexpected ways for an honest, direct appeal. A word of caution: if you’re planning to use pebbles indoors as a flooring material, either place sturdy paths or stepping stones on them or use pebbles with a flat finish for comfort underfoot. Also, make sure you install a good drainage system.

Retro. This style is ideal for folks who have an appreciation of stylised design from decades past. A Retro bathroom’s appeal lies in its combination of up-to-date conveniences with a nostalgic colour palette of orange, olive green, yellow and brown, plus bold shapes and quirky flower forms that give a sense of character which can sometimes be lacking from more utilitarian spaces.

Traditional. If you appreciate functional, unfussy, orderly design and predictable shapes then traditional is the look for you. Create the bathroom of your dreams with mouldings, decorative trims, antique furniture, subtle colours, a wooden vanity, rugs, and brass, bronze or copper tapware.

The Kitchen Designer

Contemporary. If you appreciate clean lines and thoughtful layouts and eco-friendly design, this could be the style of room for you. Here, a classy neutral colour scheme with a ceramic wall tile base soothes the eye and the milky white tub forms an inviting temptation to bathe. Throw in a frameless shower screen for quick and easy showering and cleaning, some subtle chrome tapware, subdued timber panelling and a skylight, and you have a space that’s perfect for 21st-century life and sure to appeal to both genders.

Naturalist? Have you always been a bit of a naturalist who enjoys showering or bathing outdoors? Why not wash the day away in a spacious exterior bathtub which is made cosy by the addition of scattered flower petals, pillar candles and yummy treats for two. Of course, everyday bathing in such an environment would require tall fences, good hedges or privacy screens, and an outdoor heater in winter, but this is a real treat for a romantic, pampering spa-like experience.

I luv resort style,here's our ensuite which I designed and we completed last year using a Indian buffet as a vanity and Moroccan mirrors....

Modern clean lines for me...white light fresh. With some personal touches ... big mirror unusual basin big tub looking out to beautiful country views. And a splash of colour. Heaven. Just love a soak on a cold winters afternoon. ....
