Don't Throw in the Towel! Give Your Bath Towels Pride of Place
Rolled, stacked, hung or folded, give bath towels their ideal spot in the bathroom – on display or out of sight
Towels are the trickiest accoutrement of the bathhouse to keep looking chic and tidy. If your bathroom is anything like mine, then they wind up jammed onto an oversubscribed towel rail, or slung over the bathroom door handle.
Or, they are completely inaccessible...
We’ve all exited the shower or bath dripping, only to find – nothing – not a stitch in sight with which to dry ourselves. Fresh towels nowhere to be seen, they are crammed into the linen cupboard halfway across the house, or more likely, they are still in the washing basket waiting to be folded.
Below you’ll find a host of solutions for displaying, or storing, your towels to ensure they are at hand every time you emerge from the steam.

Below you’ll find a host of solutions for displaying, or storing, your towels to ensure they are at hand every time you emerge from the steam.
A ladder. Whether it is made from bamboo, wood or steel, a ladder is a practical and slimline way to display and dry your towels. Propped up against a wall, it takes up very little of the bathroom floor’s precious footprint, it can also be removed during cleaning, and the wide rungs and tall sides offer a number of hanging, and stacking configurations.
An under-mounted towel rail. If clean lines and surfaces are the order of the day, installing a towel rail (or two) under your vanity is a neat, space-saving option. A colourful, patterned or striped towel, as pictured, creates a pop of colour and warmth, and sits in a practical, easy-to-reach spot.
A hotel-style towel rack. Hotel designers are formidable space-saving engineers, so it makes sense to look at how they store and display towels. This classic rack fitted above the toilet is compact, serviceable and timeless. It holds a pile of towels, and the rail beneath ensures a handtowel is always at the ready.
Quirky hooks. Garage sales and bric-a-brac stores are treasure troves for vintage hooks. A one-of-a-kind hook on the back of the bathroom door, next to the mirror, or grouped in a line, add a touch of charm. Don’t just rely on classic hooks, either – the old doorknobs here work brilliantly.
A wall feature. Whether grouped on a wall next to art, as in this picture, or slung over a line of mariner’s rope strung across the bathroom wall, make the towels themselves a focal point. Be sure to include all family members – there is even a towel for the dog, here, conveniently placed on a hook next to his lead.
A slimline bench. Adding a bench under a wall-mounted vanity eliminates the need for a bulkier built-in vanity or cumbersome standalone cabinetry. It also creates a chic, easy-to-access platform that is perfect for displaying your inviting fluffy towels.
A wall-mounted towel rack. This clever rack stores a huge number of towels. Not only does it eliminate the need for extra storage in cupboards, it acts as a sculptural feature, drawing one’s eye to the clever configuration.
Colourful cabinetry. Whether built-in, as pictured, or a standalone unit, a colourful cabinet adds warmth to a bathroom, and provides ample room to stack, roll and store towels.
A heated towel rail. A slimline, contemporary option offering plenty of storage space, a heated towel rail allows you not only to display your towels, but to warm them up before you use them. Luxury on chilly winter mornings.
An antique towel stand. An old-fashioned towel ‘horse’ is an eye-catching feature that adds a rustic charm to your bathing space. Its manoeuvrability is an added bonus, making cleaning bathroom floors easy.
A row of hooks. If you have a brood, and their often excessive number of towels to deal with, then a row of well-spaced hooks might be the order of the day. By allocating everyone their own hook, there should be no arguments over who used who’s towel. You could even monogram the towels with family members’ initials (in complementary bathroom hues, of course) to be extra sure there is no towel pilfering going on.
A basket. Neatly tucked under a vanity or next to the bath, a large basket of fluffy towels is warm and inviting – and easy to get to.
Hidden cabinetry. Close by, but out of sight – if you like your linen stacked away, then concealed cabinetry might be the answer.
