Girl Meets World: Sweet, Stylish and Unexpected Girls' Nursery Themes
From pink, pink, pink to glittering chandeliers and rainbow butterflies, here are the most delightful themes for your baby girls' first room
Congratulations, it’s a girl! Now, before you go off wildly nesting and turning her room into a pink princess’ paradise, stop and take a breath. Not that there’s anything wrong with pink, of course (and I’ve even included some beautiful pink examples below), but with so many amazing themes to choose from, there’s no need to rush the decision. Plus, you might be surprised at just how feminine you can make the nursery with not a spot of pink to be seen.
Before you do any decorating, decide on the feel you’d like to give the nursery. After all, it will be your baby girl’s very first introduction to the world and she’ll be spending a lot of time staring at those walls between all the changing, feeding and sleeping. So would you like to show her a world full of butterflies and ballerinas, twinkling stars or perhaps even a bustling city bursting with possibility? These ideas will help you decide…

An alternative is vintage Hollywood glamour. A stunning vintage-style chandelier really sets off the theme, along with the canopy over the cot and large toy elephant (well, Hollywood is known for its excesses, isn’t it?) Classic furniture and small touches of silver and gold are all that’s needed for a nursery that could be straight out of 1950s Hollywood.
For a more contemporary nursery that’s still high on the bling, simply stick to a brushed gold scheme. The modern chandelier, matching gold-dot wall hanging and gold-toned soft furnishings are elegant without being over the top.
City slicker
We love the urban wallpaper featuring various buildings, houses and trees in this Melbourne nursery. It’s still girly but in a less obvious way. The patchwork kite (in similar colours to the wallpaper) hanging from a tree branch is an inspired alternative to a traditional mobile and conjures up images of running through the park on a windy day.

A sophisticated duo
There is just something that really works about a pink and grey theme for girls. But imagine if these walls were pink instead of grey. The room would just look too over-the-top cutesy with the ballerina tutu and pink pompoms in the corner. Instead, the dark grey walls and classic furniture, mostly in varying shades of grey, transform it into an incredibly sophisticated nursery. The pink piggy cushion is also a reminder to inject some fun, too!

Pretty in pink
And here is the most favoured feminine theme of all … pink! Of course, there’s no limit to what you can do with this colour scheme. Here, the look is quite modern thanks to the geometric tree decals and the inclusion of lots of different shades of pink, from very pale in the trees to fluorescent in the butterfly mobile, chevron rug and elephant clothes’ basket. All of the pink additions to the room are removable, so if your little one decides that blue is her new favourite colour when it’s time to transition to a toddler room, you won’t need to repaint all the walls!

You don’t need to go crazy with pink to make an impact. This room is predominantly white, but the simple additions of a rug, ceramic side table, polka dot throw, chevron lamp shade, cushion, photo frames and various other small decorative items, all in different soft shades of pink, creates an incredibly feminine end result.
This is a more classic way to go, with soft pink polka dot wallpaper which looks super cute in combination with the pink gingham chair. The vintage butterfly prints (pink, of course!) really take this room to a new level of sweetness.
I can sing a rainbow
Can’t choose one colour? No problem. Perhaps a multicoloured rainbow theme is for you. How beautiful would it be to sleep beneath this colourful array of lanterns? All those colours and textures to gaze at from below.

There’s lots of colour in this room, yet it doesn’t seem too overpowering. The second-hand cot was painted a beautiful deep coral (a great alternative to pink) while the walls are a soothing shade of lilac.
The soft purple is again introduced in the chevron bedding, while a darker shade of orange appears in the scatter cushions and throw rug.
Wow! What better way to introduce a rainbow theme than this cascade of handmade butterflies that burst out of the cot like an escaping dream? You could quite easily limit your decorating to just this, but the owners wanted to create a nursery that was calm, fun and joyful, so they went a few steps further.
The bright colours seen in the butterfly wall display are introduced at every turn, including in the soft furnishings.
This picture wall is an eclectic display of letters, prints and decorative items in varying shades of green, purple, grey and yellow. The rainbow-coloured quilt made by the baby’s grandmother is a great way to tie the theme together (and adds extra handmade charm to the room). The colours were inspired by the little dress on the wall. Calm, fun and joyful indeed!
And as if it could get any cuter – this weekly wall chart of outfits creates yet another pop of colour (and is designed to make it easier for Dad to get the little one dressed of a morning). Although, as a mum myself, I know there would need to be space for at least three more changes of clothes per day. But still, it’s adorable!
Safari style
You might not immediately think that a safari theme would suit a girl’s nursery, but it is possible to give it a wonderfully girlish edge. Here, the giraffe, rhino and zebra heads and elephant lamp are all classic safari elements. But the floral curtains, gold ottoman and gold pendant light (which is actually a white IKEA light shade spray-painted gold) are unexpected touches that lend a little feminine lightness and whimsy to the theme.

Alternatively, you could simply go with a white and grey version of the theme for an equally effective but toned-down result.
Blue isn’t just for boys
This room shows just how versatile blue can be, even for a girl’s room. The sky-blue walls and pretty picture of the bluebird above the fireplace make sure that, even though there is no pink to be seen, this nursery is anything but boyish!

Eclectic vintage
There’s something so charming about a vintage nursery, especially when done well. Here, the traditional rocking chair has been painted hot pink, and instantly it becomes the star of the room. An elegant white mirror, dainty lamp shades and vintage fabrics on the cot and in the cushions are all that’s needed to complete the look.

Star light, star bright
Whether you want your little girl to know she’s your little star, or that the sky’s the limit, a stellar theme is another wonderfully serene way to go. Star wallpaper can be beautiful, but if you want something you can change as your baby grows, this simple yet effective wall decoration of silver stars and mirrors makes a wonderful impact.

Bonjour bébé
If neutral, elegant and calming is what you seek, then consider a French theme. A stunning French provincial-style cot is the standout piece in this room, while the colour scheme is limited to gold, cream and white. We especially love the beige striped wallpaper. Simple additions such as the intricate candelabras on the wall, simple wooden shelf for toys and heartbreakingly cute claw-foot baby bath make this a serene theme both you and your sweet bébé are sure to adore.
SAFETY NOTE: Please be aware that cot bumpers and cushions placed in the cot of a sleeping baby can pose a health risk. See SIDS and Kids for more information.

This is a fun theme that’s all about adding a little bling to your baby girl’s room. Here, this glitzy ‘G’ is the star feature, taken up a notch thanks to the addition of gold spot decals on the wall that make it look like the room is exploding with sparkling glitter. And then there’s the ruffled valance on the cot, which lifts it from plain to pretty. The pink drawers and ornate white mirror give the change table the look of a film star’s dressing table. It’s almost too glamorous to change a pooey nappy in here!
