We went for natural stone. The island bench is in an open style living area, so doubles as a piece of furniture.

I have tiles and love them, they are not the most practical as mentioned for cleaning, but there is so much room for individuality with tiles. They're great by the stove top for putting very hot pots straight onto. They do chip however so as for the stainless description , in a working kitchen embrace the blemishes that the love of family life in a kitchen brings. Not good for pastry rolling or biscuit cutting, agreed so teamed with another alternative works well on a low pastry rolling bench. Thanks for a great article.

I don't recommend Caesarstone (quartz surface). It chips very easily. We never had this sort of problem with other bench tops. My husband and I don't recall making these chips, which demonstrates how sensitive the stone is. I do have to say it is an easy stone to clean.
