The alignment of the stars, moon and sun at the time of your birth can affect and inform your character, personality traits, likes and dislikes. It is the basis of astrology – a very useful tool in self discovery and expression. Astrology can help us to identify aspects of our personalities and this, in turn, can be applied to home design. It’s Pisces’ birthday this month, so let’s take a closer look at this star sign and see how their traits can be used to design and decorate the Piscean home.

Pisces
Pisces is the 12th sign of the zodiac. The symbol of the sign is two fishes swimming in opposite directions, and many Pisceans feel a natural connection to and love for the sea. In fact, they generally feel a connection to the entire universe, and are very interested in the divine and the inner world of those around them.
They are usually intuitive, compassionate and emotionally intelligent people, who feel empathy easily and have a lot of affection to show to the people and animals in their lives. They can be very sensitive and may have difficulty understanding and working with their own emotions and sensitivities. Living with physical realities can be difficult for Pisceans, and they are often found in professions that allow them to ‘pretend’, such as acting, filmmaking, writing and music.

Architectural style: Beach house – from casual chic …
As Pisces is the ‘ruler of the depths of water’, it is often a dreamy and relaxed sign. Pisceans are therefore well suited to a beach cottage design style. They love to be near water and if they can’t achieve this, should surround themselves with beach or marine-related trinkets and architectural details.

… to Hamptons cool
For the more sophisticated Piscean, the Hamptons beach house look still gives the nod to the seaside style that Pisceans love, while expressing a more traditional aesthetic. The style was born out of a relaxed coastal look, favoured by super-wealthy New Yorkers who holiday in the Hampton beaches of Long Island. It comprises light colours, natural elements and lots of space and natural light. These are features that suit the contemplative nature of Pisces.

Character: Easy-going
People born under the sign of Pisces are anything but stuffy. They like things to be casual and comfy; that’s one of the reasons the beach house style suits their nature so well. They should go in for big, deep and comfy sofas that are scattered with soft cushions, complemented by a sisal rug underneath the feet. Pisceans want nothing too precious in their homes.

Idealistic
Pisceans might also like to recreate favourite holiday spots and decorate with treasures they have collected on trips to the seaside. Shells and starfish make for beautiful collections, and when displayed well can really help to create a casual, beachy feel in a home.
Sea-worn and washed pebbles may also appeal to Pisces. These can be collected and stored in bowls on coffee tables and are very calming when held – great for Pisces’ sometimes sensitive nature.

Sensitive
With their intense love of the water, Pisces should pay special attention to making their bathroom a beautiful and peaceful space, which will delight the senses and soothe their sensitive nature. The bathing space featured here is particularly suited to Pisceans. Not only does it have a deep, romantic bath, but it is surrounded by foliage and fairy lights that make it both ethereal and dreamy. The perfect environment for Pisces.

Dreamer
Pisceans are nothing if not dreamers. They relish time to relax and let their minds ponder the big questions in life, and know instinctively that people need down time to ignite creativity and take time to recharge their batteries. A little spot in the a garden like the one pictured here would be perfect for that pursuit.

Likes: Water views
Pisces is a water sign and as such, most Pisceans love the water. They find it very soothing and if possible, they like to live by the ocean, a river or a lake. While not everyone can afford a beach house like this one in Sydney’s Palm Beach, we can all dream – and, as we’ve just learnt, Pisces are great dreamers.

Fountains
For the rest of us, a beautiful water feature in the garden might do the trick to provide Pisces access to water in their homes. It’s not quite the same as an oceanfront, but the sound of the gurgling water as it bubbles out of a fountain urn like this one here can be very soothing.

Fish
Pisces also have a natural affinity with fish and other water creatures. Incorporating an aquarium into the home, or a pond in the garden, can be very beneficial for the Piscean homeowner. This one has been subtly created within a paved pathway – it’s both creative and beautiful.

Spirituality
Pisces is a very spiritual sign. Those born a Piscean are concerned with other-worldly concepts and may be either very religious or searching for meaning in new age ideas and philosophies. Either way, Pisces should nurture this interest to satisfy their need to know why we are here. Placing altars, statues or symbols around the home will help to feed their inquiring minds, and help to soothe their emotional nature.

Meditation
Similarly, meditation can be incredibly helpful for people born under the star sign of Pisces. It’s very easy for them to be overwhelmed by their emotions and get carried away with their feelings. Meditation helps them to focus on the present and look clearly at their thought patterns and reactions. It can also help them to get in touch with their intuition, which is particularly strong with this star sign. This room provides a spot for meditation and yoga, and appeals to a Piscean’s love of space and openness.

The arts
Pisces love the arts. They love the self expression that comes with creativity. Those born under this sign would benefit from investing time and energy in exploring their creative sides, and displaying the art that results from this exploration in their homes.
Musical Pisceans make excellent songwriters; they are emotional but are also very empathetic, and can channel these feelings into their songs. Famous Piscean musicians include James Taylor, Liza Minnelli, Kurt Cobain, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Johnny Cash and Nina Simone.

Perhaps a studio …
Having their own art studio, music room or any space that they can dedicate to their artistic pursuits will be invaluable to Pisceans. Having room to explore and practise their art form is essential. This can be in a converted garage space, attic or an under-utilised room in the home. It’s always easier to create when all your supplies and inspirations are in the one place.

… Or a stage
For the many Pisceans who love to get lost in performance and acting, some might like to install a stage like this one and produce plays from home for family or neighbours to take part in. After all, as the bard said, “All the world’s a stage”.

Dislikes: Confinement
Pisceans hate to feel closed in. They are deeply connected to the spiritual world and have mystical and ethereal tendencies. As such, they like to feel physically close to the outside world too. They prefer big, airy spaces with a lot of natural light. This room works well to bring the outside in and also has the coastal feel that many Pisceans love.

Synthetic materials
The colourful plastic furniture pictured here is both fashionably cool and irreverent, but it is not something that a Piscean would want on their deck. People born under the sign of the fish are far more traditional, and would perhaps be drawn to natural wicker or wood for outdoor furniture settings.

My birthday is 9 March - I retired to a beautiful beach in Coromandel NZ 2 years ago - so many of the Piscean traits you've described are what I have chosen - especially my studio where I am learning the art of patchwork - creating gifts for family and friends.. Sadly I couldn't afford a beachfront property but I can hear the sea crashing on the beach - that's good enough for me.
Yes 11 th March so true how do you know that ?
