This article has great points and I will forward it to clients for review. As a custom builder in Sydney, we work with clients to design and build their dream homes. When clients come with a clear vision of what they want to achieve, then we can collaboratively move forward to produce a design that meets their family needs and stays within budget. When working with a client, we bring together a team that includes an architect, a builder and a designer to work with the client at concept stage - this ensures that the integrity of the design and well as building sensibilities are considered when developing a plan. A solid design brief, coupled with a good team, will ensure that your project runs smoothly, on budget and delivers you a home that is perfect for your unique needs.

My Architect

It’s disappointing to hear these comments from Horizon Homes who have many projects brought to them by architects. Firstly, regarding the comments further above...a bit of fact checking could be a starting point. Was this homeowner actually working with an ARB register practitioner? There are many non-architects out there passing themselves off as architects when they are not. Every registered ’architect’ should be able to quote a registration number which you can check with the registration board in your state. Was a RAIA Client-Architect Contract used? This requires a client budget be inserted in the architect’s contract. Third, was the scope evolved from the starting $250k during the process to final tender? Was the tender process managed by the architect? In my experience working with 15 architects within our business, budget blow outs of 400% would absolutely never happen, nor ever happen with architects we have ever met. A message to houzz admin: It would be helpful if some mediation or fact checking was applied by houzz management to comments such as the above. These comments imply negligence in a broad sense of the profession when in fact, it is the most regulated profession in the building industry.

Thank you for your comment My Architect. We have great
respect for architects and the work they do. We regularly work with architects
and architectural plans and we enjoy helping our clients bring their designs to
life. What we were trying to say is that we encourage further cooperation
between architects, builders and clients during the design phase – since having
a builder’s input in the design can be helpful when trying to keep the project
on budget. Working with a good architect can make all the difference to a
project – they can take ideas and create something truly beautiful and unique
to the client’s needs.
