Macville Renovation
5. Gild the ceiling The dark blue and green on the walls of this room read almost as one colour at first glance, but the interplay adds depth and interest upon closer inspection. The standout feature, however, is the gold-painted ceiling. Often overlooked, the ceiling, or ‘fifth wall’, is a great place to experiment with colour, and the warm gold here creates a cocooning effect. Tip: Another paint trick that can achieve a similar result is to take your chosen wall colour and apply a cohesive wash of it over your cornices and ceiling, doing away with the sharp line break where these horizontal and vertical planes meet.
Outdoor rooms. These screen block-enclosed patios, located off the kitchen and master bedroom of this home, create an element of drama in these outdoor spaces. With the lights on at night, backlighting enhances the dramatic effect of the screen block. The blocks also divide the patio into two separate spaces,
Black and Gold - Consider tapware: When choosing wallpaper colour, don’t forget to factor in the metallic tones in your bathroom, such as taps and towel rails. Go rose gold: It’s the on-trend metallic this year and features in everything from wallpaper designs and tapware to accessories. Even a little touch will up the luxe factor and warmth in your bathroom. Rose gold also looks great alongside white bathroom fixtures and towels.
Laundry / Ironing board Cupboard Slot in a utility cupboard The owners of this neat cupboard are winning the clutter battle with their smart approach to storage. With dedicated spaces for laundry baskets, cleaning products, the vacuum cleaner and even the iron itself, you almost don’t notice the slim, vertical niche for the ironing board, tucked into the smallest of spaces on the right-hand side.
Parquet Flooring Get dramatic If you’d like your parquet flooring to make a statement, think about the shades of timber you choose. You can opt for a range of hues from light to dark, as the designers have done here. The contrast between the colours makes a bolder statement than a more uniform collection of boards, so the pattern appears striking and dramatic.
Parquet Flooring Bring in a balance For a harmonious look in your kitchen, try toning the floor with the cabinetry. The grained wood fronts of the wall cabinets in this kitchen have the same soft brown hue as the parquet floor. With the sage green base units and brushed steel surfaces in between, the effect is gentle and calming.
If you’re building, your staircase (adjacent to an entryway) can be a sneaky space to add extra storage for things like shoes and bags as you enter the house. The great thing about this is the stairs can also act as a seat when you’re putting on your shoes to go outside. Score! If you did want to do this at home, speak with a builder or stair fabricator to find out if it’s possible. There will need to be additional structural considerations, so the drawer functions while providing a safe step for you to use – but for the extra functionality, it’s worth it!
One way to keep the outside of your kitchen looking streamlined, while making the most of what’s behind, is to use multiple drawers hidden behind one drawer front. TIP: To make the most effective use of this scenario, make sure the drawer you use most often is attached to the drawer front, (which is the part you open), and store items used less frequently in the hidden drawer above. That way, you still have access to the stuff you use every day, but know there is additional storage hidden away when you need it! If you’re looking at refitting your kitchen or laundry and want to embrace the drawer, speak with a designer or kitchen manufacturer to work out what is exactly right for you and your space. They are likely to have ideas you may never have dreamed up yourself.
