Capturing the tasteful elegance and laid-back beach vibe of the Long Island holiday spot, Hamptons style continues to be a go-to interior choice for Australian homeowners who long to team style with relaxed, holiday-inspired living – whether they live near the coast or not. And to follow the suit of many design trends of late, this trend is bursting outside. According to a recent survey by Victorian building company, Accurate Construction Services, Hamptons is now the preferred style for exteriors. We’re longing for a more traditional streetscape with materials that withstand our harsh climate.

Our Love of the Hamptons
Ever since Revenge came on our screen, (or maybe you know it as the “Something’s Gotta Give” moment), this bright and breezy style has been on most people’s radar. “In the last year and half it has been gaining momentum,” says Queensland Designer, Jared Poole. “You can tell it’s getting big when the real estate agents are using it in their marketing!”

Let’s start with our climate, and the innovations in building technology that have allowed us to better protect ourselves (and homes) from it. According to Sarah Jones, marketing manager for Monier and owner of this gorgeous Hamptons-style pad in Camp Hill, Queensland, the gracious architecture of these homes, including the strong, yet streamlined materials used, work well against our ocean elements and harsh weather conditions – not to mention keeping you warmer in winter and cooler in summer. And they look as good as they act. “The pastel colour palette, slimline profile roofs and timber fretwork used are now very much in demand in everything from kitchens to cushions,” Jones says.
Hamptons style synchronises with our love of indoor-outdoor living beautifully. “Homeowners love the simple, understated yet classy aesthetic that a Hamptons home brings, while also giving them the opportunity to bring the outside in, and the inside out,” Jones says. That might be the pale interior that allows the view of the coast to soak inside, or the introduction of antique pieces and beachcomber decor to your outdoor living scheme.
Poole also points out the similarity between the Hamptons home and a classic Queenslander, which might explain their popularity in our northern states: “Both styles are set high on their land to allow breezes to waft through, have timber detailing and cladding and white trims.” It’s a “postcard pretty” look, Jones adds, and may very well signify a return to a more traditional façade for homes.

How to Get the Look
Pastel colours. Calming colours are key to this look. Not only do they allow the exterior views to take centre stage, but they also denote the calming, laid-back quality you’re going for. Think of ocean-inspired hues – cool blues, greens, soft sand yellows and blush shell pinks. Team with white, loved for its light, reflective quality, for an enduring beach feel. “If you decide to keep the interior walls white, consider adding pastel shades through soft furnishings – square-backed sofas in soft greens, or an abundance of scatter cushions with lattice designs,” says Jones.
This goes for your exterior, too. Light colours are maintaining a traditional streetscape across the country but don’t be afraid to mix it up. For a modern twist, choose a darker, charcoal shade and your home is sure to stand out in a crowd.

Natural materials. “To me Hamptons is a fairly broad style. There are so many interpretations of it, but I think materials certainly come into play,” says Poole. The warm tones of timber, jute, cane and bamboo complement the pale colour palette of Hamptons style wonderfully. On the outside, the robust earthiness of slate or concrete in charcoal or dark grey adds a wonderful accent to pale colouring or decorating timber fretwork.
Glam accents. It’s all in the detail if you’re looking to give your Hamptons house the luxe look it deserves. Antique lighting, elegantly upholstered furniture and shimmering accents in the form of an elaborately framed mirror or silver vanity accessories, for example, will kick your Hamptons home into action. There’s an Art Deco element to it, too. “Sideboards often include timber panels and geometric patterns, as do cushions and fabrics generally,” says Jones.
Beach-style accessories. You don’t have to fill your home with fishing floats and nautical memorabilia to get the beachcomber look. Think shells, driftwood, vintage bottles and woven accessories; cane baskets are wonderful at keeping clutter at bay. Outside, stock the garden with robust plants, able to withstand the coastal elements – think palms, agaves, yuccas and the iconically Australian beachside pandanus tree, all of which are suited to sun-filled locations.

Good point about the wainscoting, also its in the detailing of skirtings, cornices, and window exterior trim.
There are many variations on what makes 'Hamptons-style' but even in the Hamptons, they are not at all consistent. For my money, a home is Hamptons if it is tasteful with a neutral palette, has white woodwork, and a laid-back, coastal style preferably with linen-draped couches that make me want to sleep in them after swallowing oysters. But each to her/his own!
