Australia is a nation of beach-lovers – the beautiful natural surroundings of our island home draw us to the sea, sun and sand – so it makes sense that we love kitchens with a coastal vibe. It doesn’t matter if you live by the beach, in the inner city or out in the country, elements of a beach lifestyle can be brought home with one of these recipes for success.
Gresley Abas Architects
1. Industrial Coastal

Ingredients
  • Cool, polished concrete floors with a chunky aggregate
  • A good dose of casual modern with plywood cabinetry
  • Closed cabinets combined with open shelving to balance the weight of the timber
Method: Start with your choice of timber cabinetry and concrete flooring, then mix in black metal elements to add edge. Serve a colourful geometric splashback on the side to serve.

Key words for your interior designer: clean lines, open, minimal.

2. Modern Ocean Views

Ingredients

  • Materials and finishes within a limited colour palette
  • Light timber tones to create a beachy vibe
  • Work stations such as the sink and stove facing towards any views
  • Built-in outdoor dining table. This is a clever way of creating seamless lines, allowing the view to take centre stage
Method: Take inspiration from nature. Go for a beach walk to draw in the colours of bleached driftwood and white sand. Implement these into your mixture with a dash of contrasting colours such as ironstone to ground the palette.

Key words for your interior designer: light timber, natural palette, straight lines.

3. Coastal Calming Blues

Ingredients

  • Soft blues, borrowed from the underside of a seashell or a duck egg
  • Fresh whites and pastel greys that work well with calming blues
Method: Work in soft blues with mid-tone timbers to add contrast. If you are hungry for impact, go for a soft blue cabinet colour, or start small by painting a furniture piece, such as a hutch or kitchen stool, in this serene colour. It’s better to underdo than overdo a soft blue tone. Keep the tone to one or two selected areas.

Key words for your interior designer: soft, elegant, breezy, cool.

4. Whitewash

Ingredients

  • Lots of white
  • Cabinetry in the same colour as the wall to unify the kitchen with the rest of the house
  • Cabinets that run up to the ceiling or bulkhead, to enhance the sense of spaciousness
Method: Mix a little warmth into a fresh all-white palette with timber. From there, add your favourite colours as garnishes.

Key words for your interior designer: clean, white, fresh, calming.

5. Classic Coastal

Ingredients

  • Marble benchtops, a timeless classic for a coastal home
  • A white and black colour combination, for a foolproof interior that will never date
  • Greenery to soften the contrasting neutrals. A key plant for classical coastal kitchens is Monstera deliciosa
  • Classic mid-century furniture pieces to add charm to a new space
Method: Throw in some fun patterns to break up blocks of black and white, while keeping within a monochrome colour scheme.

Key word for your interior designer: understated, uncluttered, timeless, light.

6. Surf Style – Malibu

Ingredients

  • A mix of vintage and new items that each have a story to tell
  • Pattern that has a nostalgic feel to it
  • Textured rope knots, beading or twigs applied on accessories such as cushions and artwork
Method: Blend in textural rope knots, beading or twigs applied on accessories such as cushions or artwork. Bright colour is to be sprinkled sparingly.

Key words for your interior designer: airy, eclectic, layered, natural, textural.
Legacy Custom Homes
7. Hamptons

Ingredients
  • Soft, neutral tones such as sandy beige, dove grey and warm white
  • Accent colours with accessories in soft sea foam, duck egg blue, navy with white
  • Pendant lighting with clean minimal lines
Method: Mix a little old with new to keep this look exciting and fresh. Search for old timber bar stools or chairs to team with a new table.

Key words for your interior designer: casual, relaxed, soft, classic, bright and calming.

8. Rustic Beach Shack

Ingredients
  • Timber cabinetry that looks vintage
  • A rustic, oversized trough-style or butler’s sink
  • Timber panelling
  • Open shelving
Method: Perfect your creation by displaying canisters, kitchen cooking tools, recipe books and vintage ceramics.

Key words for your interior designer: warmth, simplicity, charming, nature inspired.

9. Great Barrier Reef Style

Ingredients
  • Timber cabinetry
  • Bamboo elements in the form of lighting and furniture
  • Textural splashback. Try grasscloth wallpaper protected with glass
  • Splashes of colour inspired by the sea and surrounds
Method: The colours are bright on the Great Barrier Reef. To reflect this, take inspiration from coral, the ocean and marine life and bring them together in and around your kitchen through soft furnishings.

Key words for your interior designer: tropical, leafy, timbers, serene yet dramatic.

10. Laid-Back Beach Style

Ingredients
  • Pared-back style with lots of fresh white
  • Timber accents. Pendant lights are a must
Method: All white doesn’t have to be boring. Add texture through wall panelling and exposed rafters for interest.

Key words for your interior designer: minimal, bright, clean and casual.
