The salvaged beams on the sawhorses became the countertop, as well as all trim in the space.

Love that second to last photo, the mantle and sides of the fireplace opening look like the Pi symbol. Wonder if this was intentional?

To quote from the first couple of paragraphs..."I still find myself longing for the objects that bear the mark of the hand, the tool, the trade, the thought and care that went into making it, the craft...there’s still room for craft in architecture." AMEN, Eric...and thank you so much for this thoughtful article. It is impossible to envision my own home without these touches of craft and artistry that imply "personal and unique."
