5 Easy Ways to Make a Wall Vignette for Your Home
A wall vignette can give your home a good dose of style and personality – here's how to get started
Wall vignettes are an attractive grouping of simple objects on a wall; they are similar to ‘wall gallery’ formations but much less formal and uninhibited. A successful wall vignette may include the following features: a theme, colour palette, focal point(s), mood and good composition (formation).
Having said that, they are an easy and inexpensive way to add personality to your home without changing its overall style. And if your home has a few too many blank walls, lacks outlook or just needs some simple love and attention, maybe a wall vignette is what your home is lacking. Interested? Here’s how you can make a wall vignette in your home.

2. Define a shape
Choose a feature wall or nook for your wall vignette. Then decide on a simple shape formation such as a circle, triangle, rectangle or square. The oval-shaped composition pictured left is simple and effective. You will also notice zigzag colour formations such as bright, peachy toned items and blues, which really pop. Simple zigzag (or triangle) formations are spatial styling patterns that help achieve a balanced composition within a vignette. These items are key focal points and have been perfectly composed within this vignette.

BONUS TIPS:
- It may initially help to use paper-patterns blue-tacked on to the wall before you commit to drilling and using permanent hooks.
- Organise your decor items in a sequence – strategically choose your focal point(s) and arrange your other pieces around these key items.
- ‘Negative space’ is the space you allow between each of your pieces and is also an important consideration.
- If you happen to be renting your home and need to be mindful of wall marks, choose lightweight items like postcards and prints. Then use 3M hooks or washi tape to attach each one.
This wall vignette is a simple rectangle shape, but when combined with the dining table, candelabra and throws, ignites a beautiful scenery and magical display of wares. Well considered formations with thoughtfully chosen colour palettes and textures work well together to create a great looking and balanced vignette.
For instance, here, the black and white prints sit unobtrusively on the white wall and quietly invite us to focus in their direction through their central placement and subtle tones. The candelabra is also sensitive to the wall display directly behind it; it does not dramatically block our view of the artworks, but its tones naturally blend with them and therefore becomes part of the vignette landscape.
The dining table also works beautifully with the black and white colour scheme established through the wall prints. This table plays an important role in this scene because it also offers an intimate space for guests to enjoy the wall vignette in its entirety.
Lastly, the woolly textured white throws help blend the black table with its surroundings while adding a touch of nature-inspired goodness.

It can be pleasing to the eye to view a variety of shapes together on a wall. A selection of portrait, landscape and circular shaped pieces help define spatial relationships and create a type of spatial harmony and balance.

The image above shows a lovely mix of portrait and landscape artworks arranged on a wall. The warm romantic colours bounce of the cool blue tones beautifully. I also really like the floral theme established here. Repetition is wonderful when used like this and can help establish a mood.
4. Use colour
Gather a selection of items chosen from a great looking colour palette. A fun and safe way to discover new tones to work with is to choose two opposing colours and match them with neutrals like white, natural or gold. Alternatively, you could base your palette on nature, soft pastels or from your favourite mix of colours. As clearly shown in this image, a well-chosen colour palette will always look beautiful on a wall and can really make a room sing.

You will again notice pops of colour repeated in zigzag/triangle formations via the likes of the blue picture, glass and bowl.
This vignette also uses a superb range of shapes through its mix of landscape and portrait frames, the sphere-shaped pendant and the tablescape of wares.
TIP: Zigzag and triangle patterns made with pops of colour will always make a great deal of visual sense!
