I think as a builder, and perhaps a manufacturer, Nik is generalising and putting all DIY products under the one banner, particularly when it comes to the more sophisticated modular brands, which among other things, incorporate genuine European quality hardware and accessories, and Australian made cabinetry. These require more an 'Alan Key' and a 'screw driver' - but are none-the-less very simple to assemble. I do agree however, some of the cheaper brands can be extremely complicated and even clumsy for the DIY'er to put together and install. When it comes to quality kitchen manufacturing, the only thing that really differs is that custom manufacturers build to a specific space, but customers can pay a premium for that one-off bespoke service. Conversely, using the same raw material, the better locally made modular systems are built on mass saving the customer on average between 20 and 30%, and in some instances, up to 50%. As designer of kitchens, bathrooms and interior spaces, my advice is do your homework and shop around, and don't simply accept that custom is necessarily the best. So called flat pack can also work well, and importantly, can even save you enough money to purchase your appliances.
