Do primary colours and plastics fail to inspire? You’re not alone. When seeking inspiration for your baby’s nursery, skip the big box stores and look to the colours and textures of the coast. Greys, creams, blues and natural textures make for a dreamy space that will lull even the most reluctant of sleepers off to the land of nod.
Shades of grey
The soft, grey timber panelling in this adorable nursery reminds me of a weather-worn boat shed, and what better way to convey a sense of being near water than a poster of all the world’s oceans? A darker, plush carpet is comfortable for a little one to lie on and won’t reveal too many stains, while the round turquoise rug gives it a pop of energy.

Naval navigator
Island wallpaper reminiscent of navigators’ maps is all this nursery needs to bring the coastal theme to life. Accents of red, white and grey complement the wallpaper nicely.

Ocean ease
Crashing waves bring life and energy to a beachy theme, and natural textures of timber, bamboo and cane add a relaxed vibe to the space – just what a baby needs to chill out and drop off to sleep.

Calm with palms
The wide, white panels in this baby’s room are a subtle way to introduce texture into the space. Shiplap walls have an outdoorsy feel and the pop from the green palms exudes tropical style. Even if it’s hot outside, this room has all the elements to feel cool and soothing. A slip-covered chair is a practical choice in a baby’s room, particularly if you’re sticking to white.

Modern aqua
This gender-neutral room is modern and playful thanks to its two-tone wall colours. The two shades of blue/green are similar to the shades of ocean water and a summer sky. Using the darker shade on the bottom grounds the space and helps the room feel light and airy. A timber cot brings in some warm and welcome contrast to the room’s aqua tones.

Light and natural
Life with a baby can be hectic, but this room is as calm and serene as a yoga studio. The room is a strong example of minimalist style, while still offering a couple of fun touches by way of a pink mobile and blanket. The beach photograph gives the room a point of interest, and a hanging chair and leather pouffe are comfortable pieces of furniture, perfect for Mum and bub.

Frame the landscape
Instead of hanging typical nursery art, choose pieces you like with subject matter and colours that nod to the seaside. A collection of a few different pieces of artwork is a nice way to fill out the space above your change table. The white space in each print helps to make it feel cohesive rather than crowded. The sails on the baskets are a cute way to carry the nautical theme one step further, without making the room look too themed.

Cottage cosy
Another example of the boathouse look, this room maintains a calming neutral palette with texture as the main point of interest. The soft furnishings are practical choices for a baby – Roman blinds will block out light during baby’s nap time, plush carpet is comfortable for babies learning to crawl, and the slip-covered armchair is easily cleaned.

Animal studies
The symmetry of this room produces a feeling of order, a wise choice in a space that can get chaotic. Soft, muted colours are more mature but still baby-friendly. The vintage encyclopaedia-style prints will inspire learning as well as being beautiful to look at. The key is keeping the artwork limited to a collection of the same style.
