Before & After: A Kitchen Complements a Colourful Dining Room
See how a mid-century timber-and-white kitchen works beautifully beside a pink and duck-egg blue dining area
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
- For the kitchen and adjacent dining room, a crisp white base with accents of timber and pops of baby pink and duck-egg blue.
- The layout of the kitchen, butler’s pantry and laundry changed significantly to enable single access and to create a continuous flow through to the outside area. This allowed more bench space and storage for all three spaces.

- The striking colours and warm timbers played a huge part in the aesthetic of the space and gave us a beautiful palette to work with.
Starting point
The Marc Pascal Eyoi Yoi light (pictured below) in the adjacent dining space is such a colourful feature. We used this to form our colour palette of white, duck-egg blue and baby pink.

What challenges did you work around?
The kitchen and laundry were originally two seperate rooms and the spaces were totally disconnected. The new layout provides more storage as well as a better flow and connection to all spaces.
Finding a balance of open and closed storage to display items certainly paid off, as the curated pieces on display are just beautiful and they hold sentimental value to the family.
Corners on spaces always provide a challenge, and in collaboration with the client, designer and joiner, we came up with useful storage solutions. The dimensions of the joinery are all custom to suit the family’s needs.

Why do you think this room works?
The peninsula kitchen layout works really well, especially for breakfast at the bench!
