Before & After: How a Bedhead Led a Classic Bedroom Makeover
A newly purchased Waldorf Astoria-style bed sparked a renovation for a couple craving a classic hotel-style bedroom
In a Q&A format, we talk to the designers – and examine the creative thinking – behind some of Houzz’s most loveable rooms.
Brief
The clients wanted a sanctuary to escape to after a busy day, a space that’s similar to a hotel room. With one client working from home most of the year, it was especially important that their bedroom felt separate and special. They were both drawn to a more traditional style, but being a young couple, it was also important for the space to be fresh and modern.

Starting point
The couple approached me after they had purchased a lovely Waldorf Astoria-style bedhead. Once this striking piece was installed, they started to feel a bit overwhelmed with how to make the rest of the room live up to it. They wanted the design to take inspiration from this piece as a starting point and to expand on it.

The nightstands are an églomisé finish, a style that is a modern industrial take on the French traditional style.
The eight-drawer dresser features a high-polish, ink-black finish with gold leaf base and gold-fitted tetragon crystal hardware.
Both the nightstands and dresser are from Hooker Furniture, supplied by Globe Imports.

The bed-end ottoman is a custom-made piece with brass studding and wenge-stained legs from Casa Mia.
The fabric is a houndstooth by Kravet from an outdoor range supplied by Elliott Clarke.
The vinyl wallpaper is by Arte from Unique Fabrics.
The bedroom before works
Challenges you worked around
It took a lot of consideration to find the right wallpaper, as the dark blue of the bedhead was already existing, and it was important to balance this with the walls. In the end, the opposite colour on the colour wheel worked best to bring out the most of this strong blue.

Thinking behind the arrangement of furniture/fixtures
The design centred around the bedhead. Its bold colour and dominance in the room meant that the design had to anchor it in the space. This was done by introducing other strong shapes and materials. The shimmer of the nightstands and the urn shape of the lamps complement the bedhead while the black dresser balances it in the space.

Why do you think this room works?
The only colours in this room are the blue of the bedhead and the ochre of the wallpaper. It was important to limit the palette and instead of introducing more colour, we brought in warm metals, mirror and black. This is also helped by the fact that each piece brings with it a complementary style, a modern take on the traditional.
