Blue in the Bedroom for a Peaceful Night's Sleep
Bring the sky and sea indoors for tranquility and peace
Beautiful blue in the bedroom … there’s a reason why blue is the world’s most popular colour. After all, it is the sky on a perfect day; it is turquoise Tahiti; deep ocean navy; it is the perfection of sapphires, and it is lapis lazuli from the era of Tutankhamun. Blue is also the colour of Dutch irises in spring and cornflowers caught in a breeze.
From a psychological perspective, blue is the colour of honesty and trust and it is reliable. Physically, it is soothing and has been known to slow the metabolism.
From a very young age, I have found calm lying on my back looking up into a cloudless sky, or gazing out across the sea. Whether you surround yourself with blue or have a mere flirtation with the colour, bringing it into your bedroom will create a stress-free environment and a room that will induce physical and mental relaxation … exactly what the doctor ordered.

Kiss of blue
If you love the whimsy of all-white for a beach or country feel, but desire a kiss of blue, introduce it through a feature piece of furniture in otherwise monochromatic and simple furnishings.
STYLE TIP: To bring flow to the room, match that kiss of blue to a darker tone of blue as a print in cushions or rugs.

Dupain
Muted blue
This is fresh air brought directly into your bedroom. It would be impossible to feel tense in the company of Dulux ‘Dupain’.
This blue will also ground a soft pink, creating a delicate balance.

Terrific turquoise
You can’t go wrong with blue and orange. As complementary colours on the colour wheel, these two hues work together in every combination.
For a bright and contemporary blue I recommend: ‘Hot Pop Blue’ by British Paints. This will work with a bright orange but also with layers of white.
If you want turquoise in the room but not on your walls, use it with white and black for a crisp and contemporary feel.

A touch of royal
Royal blue describes both a bright shade and a dark shade of azure blue. It is a bold colour that pairs well with yellow, or whites and soft blue-greys.
You can tone it down with soft furnishings of natural fibres with the emphasis on texture: natural unbleached linens, grass floor coverings, or crisp white cottons and shutters.
STYLE TIP: For a mid-tone royal blue I recommend ‘Royal Cloak’ by Taubmans and for an accent in turquoise, ‘Shampoo’ by Dulux.

Pop it in blue
If you love a neutral scheme that is soft and eclectic in furnishings, introduce a burst of blue in an unexpected way. A mid-tone blue like this works well with light and dark timbers. Haymes ‘Royal Fair’ has a wonderful energy.

Bravery in blue
This is your pop without being jarring. Taubmans ‘Bravado Blue’ has a tint of royal with white added so it is softer.

Blue in tranquility
This shade of blue will never date. ‘Sea Cliff’ by Dulux works with vintage-style country interiors, a cottage by the sea or a newborn’s room. It is the essence of serenity and it is the sky on a perfect day.
STYLE TIP: Use this blue full strength, half and quarter in the one room for visual harmony.

Vally of stars
Starring quality
Haymes ‘Valley of Stars’ is just that: the blue of an open sky that is peaceful, light and pairs perfectly with fresh whites and soft pinks.

Play it down with grey
A soft grey-blue is luxurious with dove grey in a bedroom. The colours work tonally together across a room with white for an elegant, understated and classical feel.
STYLE TIP: For a soft blue that works wonderfully with a light grey, try British Paints ‘Blue Cashmere’.

Blue Passion
Passionately blue
British Paints ‘Blue Passion’ is my beloved mid-tone blue that is striking with taupes, stones and a dusky pink. It is also gorgeous with a darker navy or admiral blue.

Bring in the master
Mix and match the same colour family with ‘Blue Passion’ from British Paints and a dark navy, ‘Thunder Bay’ from Haymes.

Blue Lobelia
Strong in blue
A right royal, Dulux ‘Blue Lobelia’ oozes confidence and is perfect for a bedroom with a classical or masculine edge.
Use it in a narrow or wide stripe with white or stone for a Ralph Lauren look.

Striking in blue
For a statement in blue that is confident and shouts “reliable”, Taubmans ‘Brittany Blue’ is striking with accents of red and white.

Snoop
Blue whispers
I had to add my favourite blue of the moment. Dulux ‘Snoop’ is moody but serene and sophisticated for apartment living, and divine with silver and gold accessories.

For a stunning blue that suits many decor schemes, from The Hamptons to apartment chic, duck egg is perfect.
It is soft, stylish and never overbearing, and it can move from the blue to green spectrum at different times of the day with differing amounts of light. It can be used as a solid colour and in print.
This is a blue that can be used from the walls (in matts and semi sheens), lampshades, cushions and curtains to the upholstery and rugs.
My personal favourite duck egg is ‘Taras Bowl’ by Murobond.
