Charming and cozy. It's nice to eat as a family in the kitchen.

I would recommend you consider glass front cabinets in your new kitchen to take the place of your China cabinet. I did that in my new kitchen and I am VERY glad. It gets lots of complements. Open shelving was not the answer for me. I would worry about dust

If the house is open concept and the dining area is right next to the kitchen, I think an island is more functional, yet you don't lose the interaction. We use our island to bake cookies with the kids (supplies are spread everywhere on the table), do art projects together, put all the food for parties and gatherings on it, etc. And it is so easy to clean and looks the same after! A table, well, it's going to look beat up after a few of these projects with the kids. I'm pro island all the way.
