Each year of the lunar calendar is ‘owned’ by a Chinese zodiac sign and there are twelve in each cycle. The Gregorian (or Western) year 2017 marks the Year of the Rooster according to the lunar calendar. The rooster takes the tenth spot in each cycle. If you’re thinking of adding the rooster motif to your lunar new year decor, here are some ideas to inspire. And you don’t even have to remove them after the festive season is over.
The rooster motif is usually associated with French country style but as the pictures below show, it can be incorporated into and paired with almost any style of decoration. Keep an eye out for interesting rooster items when you go op-shopping or during your travels to get your collection going.
Tip: It doesn’t always have to be an image of or rooster-shaped; think feathers and colours like reds and yellows and even dark green!

Well suited
If your decor is rustic in style, a painted rooster on a barn door lets you bring a bit of the outside in; and it’s a nice touch to the exposed-brick wall.
Trivia: Nature’s alarm clock, the cockerel or rooster, apparently crows at the same time every day, regardless of whether it can see day break or otherwise, report scientists in Japan. They believe it is regulated by a circadian rhythm in the rooster’s internal clock, rather than external triggers (light from the breaking dawn).

Pulling it all together
In this Mediterranean-style, traditional kitchen, an embossed rooster on a tile (set as a splashback) … and an almost life-size rooster table ornament (or a cookie jar!) are all that’s required to set the tone.

Keep it simple
Just a series of paintings or prints of your favourite fowl is all it takes to create a focal point in the living area.

Delicate accents

Add-ons
Sheets and pillowcases with rooster prints add a fun element to the decor. You wouldn’t need a cock’s crow to wake you up in this bright and airy master bedroom.

Let’s get cosy
A clutch of chicken or rooster table ornaments – or cookie jars – lends a homey, rustic feel to this kitchen.

Daily ware
Plates! Buy them in different sizes and with different rooster or chicken motifs to add a touch of whimsy while you dine.

Doing double duty
A tray can be functional and decorative. When not in use, prop it up (like you would a framed picture) or use it to hold keys, a bowl of change and other necessities. Doubles as a laptop table or a mini table for lunch-on-your-lap!

Quirky yet functional
Feather-like embellishments on this cushion cover add textural interest; find bright colours to perk up a neutral palette (sofa and other throw cushions). This punchy vermillion is the appropriate festive colour for the lunar new year too.

Just point the way

Anchor it
A window valance is a good way to incorporate different styles and finishes to a plain window. And these can be easily changed to suit the festivities or just because.

Playful pairings
After the lunar new year festivities are over, this majestic ceramic rooster still takes pride of place on a kitchen or dining table.
Tip: Swap the basket of eggs for colourful dip-dyed Easter eggs or marbled tea eggs (look online for recipes.)

It’s fun!
The row of feathered friends says it all…
Trivia: It seems that a rooster’s crow reveals something about the pecking order in the farm yard. It’s reported that biologists have discovered that roosters follow a strict social order when announcing the rising of the sun.
