Great article. And hell to the yeah regarding wants and needs! When did stone bench tops and media rooms become must-haves? My husband's a builder and has A LOT of these types of conversations. Lots of practical and worthwhile advice here - thank you!

We bought a mid-80s house last year. We had the entire interior professionally repainted in a unified, fairly neutral, colour scheme before we moved in (it took three weeks). We figured this would be the worst job to do AFTER all the furniture was in place. It was a good decision because it felt more like our home straight away. We're now almost finished with putting the new kitchen in (BIG upheaval - noone warns you). Ideally, we'd have done all the renovations before moving in but it just wasn't possible. We're going to take a much-needed break before we tackle bathrooms!

We bought our home in 1993 and it was seriously dated back then! Built in 1980 it was modeled on an old German farmhouse, had structural beams galore, and retro 70's fittings in lurid mustard, emerald, pink and navy plastic, every room was carpeted to match the fittings, walls were covered in chocolate brown hessian, kitchen bench was mustard brown mosaic tiles with chocolate grout that was broken and falling out - and we couldn't afford to do anything as we were busy raising four kids. But before moving in, we ripped up the carpets and painted all walls and staircases and floors in bright white, and it was the best thing we could have done. It still has its old beams and rustic character in spades, but it instantly became bright and light and CLEAN. if you can do nothing else, PAINT PAINT PAINT...
