Designing With the Stars: Sagittarius
How to create a space that celebrates your star sign
According to astrologers, your personality can be shaped by the way the stars, moon and sun are aligned at the time of your birth. That makes the zodiac a great resource to consult when trying to define your personal style and decorate or design your home. This month it’s Sagittarius’ birthday, so let’s take a look at the archer’s traits and how these can best be expressed in the home.

Sagittarians are not known for their tidiness. They like to live a relaxed and comfortable lifestyle and so don’t go too much for the clean lines of modern architecture, or the prescriptive style of traditional interior design. They are much more suited to an eclectic aesthetic, furnished with a combination of old and new pieces, plump cushions and many textures.
Their choices for furniture and decorations are usually personal and meaningful, and an eclectic style allows them to curate pieces based on this meaning, rather than the unity of style in a space.

Sagittarians also love rustic elements in their home, such as reclaimed wood furniture, tin, iron and natural timber flooring. This style speaks to their love of the outdoors and nature, and appeals to their somewhat wild and adventurous spirit.
Character: Adventurous and optimistic
Sagittarians love to collect items from travels to display in their homes. They are also optimistic and spiritual and love to feel free and independent; they hate to feel constrained. But because they are big picture people, they often miss the details and this can be problematic (just ask my husband – unpaid telephone bills anyone?)
Similarly, they aren’t great with responsibility (though I haven’t left a child on a bus yet) and can be unpredictable. Practicality and realism are not their strongest qualities, but they’re an optimistic bunch, so they won’t worry too much about those negative details. This trait can be seen in Sagittarian homes, which are nearly always filled with a collection of things they find fascinating, and are often bright and cheerful as well.

Likes: Nature and the outdoors
Sagittarians have a very expansive view on life and this is reflected in their love of nature and the outdoors. They crave wide open spaces and love to visit or live in the country. Sagittarians, however, also love all the excitement that a city has to offer and so should try to stay near a regional centre or city, if they decide to go for a full tree change. Those born under this sign are probably best suited to living in the city and escaping to the country when possible.

If a trip to the country is difficult or too infrequent, try to bring the outdoors inside by filling your home with indoor plants and even trees. While Sagittarians aren’t always great with the responsibility of caring for plants (we may forget to feed them while they’re off on some adventure), they need the contact with the natural world to keep their feet on the ground.
Travel
Sagittarians usually have a very adventurous soul and as such love to travel. Their homes should reflect this, with displays of maps or plenty of shelf space to display trinkets and artefacts picked up on their many journeys. Sagittarians don’t do well with routines and are always looking for something new. If they can’t travel overseas, they will be happy just visiting new areas in their local environments or taking small weekend trips to clear the cobwebs.

Learning
Sagittarians are usually open minded and constantly seek intellectual stimulation. They love to be exposed to different ideas and philosophies. As such, they enjoy being surrounded by books. A Sagittarian decorating or planning a home would do well to invest in many bookcases. They would also enjoy a dedicated study space in which to plan trips or simply expand the mind.

Art and ornamentation
Spirituality is very important to Sagittarians. Whether it be in the form of an organised religion or a more New Age interest, Sagittarians love grappling with the spiritual concerns of life. They like to investigate why we are here on earth and explore the ideas and practices of various faiths. They may like to stimulate these interests by using spiritual decoration or art and iconography around the home. They also like to display pictures and paintings gathered from some of the places they have been to or would like to go.

Philosophy
Sagittarians love philosophy and the big questions in life. Many are drawn to pondering life and what it means to be human, and so might like to be surrounded by quotes from philosophers and writers in their homes. This huge blackboard would appeal to a Sagittarian’s leanings toward a rustic aesthetic. In a Sagittarian home this idea would also create a space in which to express their own musings, or to reflect on someone else’s – and I am pretty sure those of us born under this sign would probably also love the tribal fabric of the bench seat, and the exotic mood it evokes in the room.

Adventure
This star sign loves activity. With a dislike for limitations and an innate physicality, Sagittarians are interested in sport and physical pastimes. People born under the sign of Sagittarius would do well to accommodate their love of activity in their homes (as much as possible). As their symbol is that of a centaur, they have a natural affinity for horses. While most people can’t have stables attached to their homes, there are a number of other ways to use your home to foster your sporting pursuits.

Many Sagittarians would love to use their bike as a bit of wall decoration like this. It also means the bike is easily accessible and ready for a ride at a moment’s notice. Bike riding gives Sagittarians a sense of freedom and speed that they find invigorating and soothing.
Rock climbing anyone? How cool is the wall on the side of this house! I am sure this feature would suit many Sagittarians who are after a bit of adventure. It’s also relatively easy to construct, with the handholds and footholds available for purchase at some hardware and sporting equipment stores. These are bolted into walls and can even be placed inside homes, so that you can literally climb the walls.
If you can’t afford stables in the backyard, and don’t want to Spiderman-climb up the side of your house or use bikes as interior decorations, you can still gear your home toward more simple activities. Take this barrel of walking sticks for example; it looks attractive at the front or back door and is a constant reminder or cue for adventure. Just grab a stick and go take a hike. It’s adventure at your doorstep!
Dislikes: Restrictions
If you’re a Sagittarius and can’t access the countryside, try to make sure you have big, wide windows that look out on nature. The important thing is to have an expansive view and not feel hemmed in. If you are in an apartment, you’d do well living on one of the higher floors so that you can look out far and wide to promote a sense of freedom.

Too much structure
Sagittarians love free-form design and this concept not only extends to layouts of homes but also to the garden. Sagittarians would much prefer to see plants layered and unstructured, rather than following formal lines. Sagittarian homes are unlikely to have crisply manicured lawns or tightly shaped hedges. They feel closely aligned to nature and don’t like to see it constrained from its natural tendency for wild growth.

Decorating colours: Blues and purples
Sagittarians love all shades of blue and purple. A map like this one marries their love of travel and learning with these colours for some classic Sagittarius style.

Brights
As Sagittarius has an eclectic sensibility, they are drawn to vivid colours all mixed together for a bohemian vibe. This is also bright and sunny, appealing to the optimistic nature of Sagittarius.

Being a Sagittarian myself, this photo makes me happy. Sometimes you just need to leave your beautiful home and get out, go for a walk and let nature soothe the soul. Enjoy!

Designing With the Stars: Scorpio
This star sign, the ninth in the zodiac, is very exciting for me as it’s close to home (pardon the pun). I’m a Sagittarian and can’t wait to have a look at the type of decor I should have in my house. If only I wasn’t living with a more conservative Scorpio, who likes to have control and can’t stand clutter (which we Sagittarians prefer to call eclecticism!)
Sagittarians are known to be seekers and love adventure and travel. In this vein, they’re generally interested in the big issues in life. They find spirituality, religion and philosophy fascinating and are generally open minded and usually imaginative.
