For the ultimate in toy storage, have a go at making these peek-a-boo bags
Trying to keep things neat and tidy when you have little people running around is an uphill battle. Make your life easier with these fun peekaboo bags; they’re the perfect size for small toy sets such as Duplo and Lego. And, they make cleaning up so much easier as kids can see what toys they are picking up. The added bonus is that they look amazing all hanging up in a row.
What you’ll need:
- 1 quilting cotton fat quarter
- Iron-on interfacing ($6.99/5 metres at Spotlight)
- 0.2 mm clear vinyl sheet ($5.99/metre at Spotlight)
- Ribbon/cord
- Haberdashery scissors
- Iron
- Sewing machine
- Pins
Step 1: Cut all your pieces
- Cut two pieces at 15 x 45 centimetres in both the fabric and interfacing. These will form your bottom panels.
- Cut two pieces at 12 x 45 centimetres in the fabric, these will form your top panels.
- Cut two pieces at 10 x 45 centimetres in the vinyl.
- Cut two lengths of ribbon or cord at 76 centimetres each.
Step 2: Iron on the interfacing
Take your bottom panels and place the rough side of the interfacing against the back side of the fabric. Using a hot iron press together, being careful not to move the interfacing off the fabric. Test to see if the interface has bonded with the fabric only once it has cooled.

Step 3: Finish edges
Using a serger, or your sewing machine on the zig-zag mode, sew the edges of the two bottom panels. This stops the edges fraying.
Tip: It helps to lay out your pieces in order: top panel, vinyl panel and bottom panel.

Step 4: Sew your vinyl
Lay your vinyl panel on top of your bottom panel and match the long sides. Sew a 3 millimetre seam along one side with a straight stitch. Next, flip open the vinyl and fabric section and sew a 6 millimetre topstitch.
Tip: Sewing vinyl can be tricky; put a piece of masking tape on the underside of the sewing machine foot to help it glide over.
