Exposed: Bricks in All Their Glory... Inside the Home
The natural beauty of bricks is driving their use in interiors across the style spectrum
As in fashion, trends come and go when it comes to architecture and interiors. The dated brick featured in ‘60s and ‘70s abodes have served to put many people off using brick in their new or refurbished homes, but brick is now being reinterpreted in fresh and fabulous ways, and gaining fast favour.
Not only do brick feature walls and flooring add character and flair, they also give homes of all ages and styles an industrial edge – and we all know how much that’s in vogue right now.
These homes have gotten it right when it comes to making the most of exposed brick; they’re positively inspirational.

Eclectic energy. This colourful and cosy room is brimming over with character thanks to that fabulously flawed brick feature wall. The layered rugs and mismatched furniture are the perfect accompaniment.
Mid-century charm. Bricks can create just the backdrop you need for a casual dining area. The white artwork pops against the warm tones of this lovely wall.
Make an entrance. It makes sense to use bricks for flooring in areas with direct access to the outside – entries, laundries and kitchens are all prime candidates – simply because they don’t show up the dirt.
Industrial edge. Metallic materials work brilliantly alongside exposed bricks, as this cafe so aptly demonstrates. I can’t get enough of this combination; so much so that I’m aiming for a look like this in my next kitchen.
Warehouse chic. There’s no need for a kitchen splashback when bricks come into play. They’re both hardy and scrubbable.

Show off. Open shelving is a great choice in a kitchen with a wall of exposed bricks – covering them up with cabinets would be a serious crime.
Added extra. Although older homes often have bricks hiding beneath plaster walls (these walls can usually be restored to their former glory), bricks can add age and character to the most modern of homes. The bricks in this contemporary extension look like they’ve always been there.
Stairway heaven. Don’t forget about the stairwell as a way to incorporate exposed brick. It makes the up-and-down journey far more interesting.

Natural fit. High ceilings and natural light make choosing exposed brick interior walls a no-brainer, whereas smaller, darker rooms can feel cramped with anything other than light tones. Brick walls painted white can be a great solution in small areas – you get all that great texture without darkening the space.

Whitewash. A painted wall like this lightens up this eat-in kitchen, yet still gives us a glimpse of the brick colour and form underneath.
Pale face. Light-toned bricks may be the answer if you’re concerned about making a space look too dark and would rather not use paint.
Unexpected element. The bathroom is probably the place you’d least expect to see exposed bricks. And that’s exactly why it works so well. Homes that surprise tend to also delight.
Poolside punch. Brick has long been a popular material in outdoor spaces, but it’s now making an appearance in more novel ways. The brick poolside wall here combines beautifully with the many other materials used in the design of this Melbourne oasis.
