So true re polycarbonate and the winter and summer sun. Grapevines and wisteria are great alternatives in our simple North facing pergola courtyard in the corner of our l shaped house . It has been renovated into a Moroccan retreat with low pladtic rattan furniture and cushions outdoor rug and lanterns

True connie our pergola has no doors and perfectly adequate with the deciduous vines however mosquitoes are a problem at dusk ...anyone have any solutions apart from totally enclosing...the water is in the tub saucers though the Moroccan fountain is not still water

Using cooling foliage as a natural sun shade such as Westeria is a great idea - love your work Arthur Lathouris! I love a natural sun shade such as a large Jacaranda tree - shower it with water and sit beneath on a hot summers day with a cool iced tea = heaven.
