High and Mighty: Sophisticated Ceiling Ideas
Take your home to new heights with creative ceiling designs that add chic-appeal
Despite their height and vastness, ceilings can sometimes fly under the radar when it comes to styling and decoration. Too often we spend hours upon hours obsessing about the finer details on the floor and walls we totally forget that what lies above can also be something really special.
So don’t blow your renovation/decoration budget without thinking about the ceilings, too. And preferably when you’re in the planning stages. After all, the potential is exponential.
To get you started on creating your own chic ceilings, here’s a selection of standout examples.

To get you started on creating your own chic ceilings, here’s a selection of standout examples.
Wooden panelling. When done well, wooden panelling creates a stunning linear effect. If you have floorboards, it’s natural to feel nervous that panelling the ceiling might be overkill. However, as you can see in this image, the flow and joinery in the ceiling makes it look completely different and not simply a mirrored version of what’s below. The natural shades of timber look stunning against the white walls, too.
Corrugated iron. Imagine how ordinary this kitchen would look (and feel) without the installation of this corrugated iron? While this material is usually associated with all things rustic and country – and outdoors – this example offers a thoroughly modern take. The waves in the metal look positively molten against the clean lines and dark palette of the room.
Majestic cathedral. There is no question: panelled cathedral ceilings are beautiful and best suited to homes within the Beach, Rustic or Country style categories. These definitely have to be planned early on in the construction process as they can’t just be created on a whim. Panelled cathedral ceilings look best in white or neutral tones, otherwise you can lose that grandeur of space.
Pressed metal. Lovers of pattern and metallics rejoice: this is a ceiling just for you. No doubt visitors to this home are drawn to its moody but ornate detailing. It’s also probably the most tactile ceiling in this set of examples. If you create this effect at home, don’t be surprised if guests request if they can reach up and touch it (so have a step ladder handy).
BONUS TIP: If the pressed metal effect is too much for you in ceiling form, try it as a splashback instead.

Skylight drama. This suits spaces lacking in natural sunlight and looks best when developed in a balanced, linear manner such as in this grid design. For best results, go right to the edge of the walls so it encompasses the entire ceiling and maximises the illusion of space. Just make sure you don’t have tall trees nearby or you’ll forever be climbing up onto the roof to collect all their leaves.
Basic black. Classic and incredibly chic, this is the little black dress of ceilings … but with a bit more oomph. If you’re attempting this one, keep the rest of the room white or cream so you get that powerful monochromatic effect. In this image, the thick detailed cornices border the black area perfectly so it’s well contained. Also, go semi-matte – think a cross between a glossy noir and chalkboard paint.
Recess time. This works well if you want to experiment with shapes and statement lighting. Make sure your recess stands out by painting it a different shade (take your cue from this image). It’s also a neat idea (literally) to have the shape of your furniture reflect the recess above. Case in point: the circular configuration of this dining table and chairs looks balanced below the matching recess.
Industrial concrete. Concrete sheeting suits an Industrial-style space or loft apartment. It gives the illusion of space and matches any pillars that might otherwise appear bulky. The light grey ceiling in this shot is juxtaposed beautifully with the warmth of the floorboards which prevent the space from feeling too cold.
Raise the roof. Although this minimalist floating ceiling is quite simple in style, it still achieves the same level of show-stopping appeal as more elaborate ceiling treatments. Since this space is an outdoor entertaining area, the void between the staggered ceiling surfaces has been left open to allow for ventilation. If you want to recreate this look inside your home, close the gap with clerestory windows that will allow natural light to flood the room.
Wallpaper surprise. Why restrict wallpaper to walls when you can add interest to the ceiling? This wallpaper works wonderfully with the warm tones of the walls, curtains and flooring. It’s pure luxury.
