You want 34-36" all around for an island. Go to the 36" if it is a side with an appliance opening towards it.

We've covered clearance around an island a number of times above, with varying opinions, but the National Kitchen & Bath Assoc. recommends 42" of clearance between counters for one cook & 48" for 2 so someone can pass. In some cities, there are codes for a minimum clearance. In San Francisco it is 36".

Does a kitchen island have to be central in a kitchen.
My range/cooker is in the chimney which is a the main focal point in the room, but I would like more clearance on the side where the cabinets are, so do you think this would look odd.
