SKETCH3D Residential Design

VR is certainly a valuable tool, I have been providing my clients with BIMx interactive 3D presentations for several years now and it has shown its worth many times over. For me, I find giving VR files to clients rather than charging for it as an extra service save me time as a designer as clients understand the design rather than misinterpret 2D plans or static 3D views. The feedback is far more valuable and the end design benefits. And lets face it, 3D immersive technology is fun, although a little disorienting when using VR goggles. Like with 3D games however you have to think about the end users technology. So keeping the model size sensible is important and try using texture maps rather than 3D geometry for effects.

One bit of advise to those who are looking to provide this as a service. It's best to buy a proprietary product rather than go from scratch. Before BIMx become a standard feature and as a free viewer download, I developed my own 3D interactive presentation system using a gaming engine. Although the results were OK it took more work than it was worth to get the output. An off the shelf system means if you model your building well (Good templates help) then all you're doing is publishing the output whilst having a cup of tea and you're done. Send a link to the client and wait for the feedback.
