In dealing with builders and subies when they want to change something, in 75% of the time it is because it is easier or cheaper for them, 20% of the time because it is a better job but costs more, and only 5% of the the time is it easier and better and does't cost any more.

A verbal price is super dodgy. As the others have said, a reputable builder will give you an itemised quote, usually broken down by trade (rather than room). It's important that both of you know exactly what's being quoted at what price. The less grey areas the less chance of things going south (for either party) down the track.
