Planting and maintaining a beautiful garden is all good and well, but your goal should be for people to really experience the garden, rather than just admire it from inside the house or the back deck. This is where a garden path comes in. The right pathway can invite you, and anyone else occupying or visiting your home, to go for a wander and take in the detail – to unwind, slow down and stop to smell the roses. These garden path ideas will have you transforming your garden into a welcoming oasis designed for living, not just looking.

Step by step. These free-form pavers wind their way through lush gardens that mix colour and texture with both formal and whimsical elements. The pool is all the more inviting because of the pathway that leads you there.

Designer good looks. Hardwood boardwalks are a fitting choice for a tropical garden. Raised boardwalks also make room for under-path lighting.

Steeped in tradition. A path that combines gravel with paving stones creates a European-inspired look that makes a wander through the garden that bit more interesting. I love how the paving diamonds grow and shrink in size to give the pathway a sense of movement and perspective.
Art in Green
Tiered terraces. This is a great idea for gardens on a slope. Steps link a serious of platforms for various activities – there’s an area for sun loungers, a spot for dining, and a garden bench to sit and pause a while. The water feature’s stepping stones are a fun detail that also serves to break up the paving expanses.

Side way. If you have room down the side of your house for a garden, make the most of it with mass plantings of colourful flowers and a path that connects the front and rear gardens.
Maria Hickey & Associates Landscapes
Cottage charm. How delightful is this garden? The inlaid pavers are the ideal fit for such a space – it’s pretty enough to belong in a fairytale.

Artistic touch. This Aboriginal-inspired garden path is all the more eye-catching because it switches from pebbles to timber halfway along. It leads from the rear of the home to the side gate.

Country way. There’s no need for fancy pavers if you have a pathway this lovely. Line it with low-set hedging and increase the heights of plantings as you retreat from the edges to make sure every bloom has the chance to shine.

River stones. Hopping from step to step as you make your way down this garden path is sure to take you back to your childhood – remember hopscotch?

Secret garden. This dreamy path is all the more magical with the cobalt pottery domes adding punches of colour along the way.

Mix and match. Varying the pavers along a garden path makes it a noteworthy feature, rather than just a means to get from A to B.
ecodesign Pty Ltd
Easy does it. Pavers set into gravel minimises weed maintenance and looks pretty terrific, too.
Blanford Design
Leafy oasis. Think about colour when you’re planning your garden path – white gravel looks very different to red or brown – and why not design it to wind through the garden rather than travel in a straight line?
Atelier Nelumbo Garden Design
French kiss. Set into lush green lawn, these large-format pavers create a dramatic pathway day or night.
Alyssa Carey
Nature’s gift. Sliced tree-trunk rounds make for a whimsical, and utterly delightful, pathway just right for a cottage garden.
