I have 2 x 18 year olds, have to tell them ten times before they get up to do their chores and they have been doing it since they were 5yo. We swap chores every school holiday.

Oh yes! I know that one well. I have a 21 year old, an 18 year old and a 16 year old. All girls who have had household chores to share since they were very small. However with the three of them there tends to be an attitude of " it's not my turn ". It can get very frustrating.

I'm a member of a large, functional extended family with 7 siblings raising 20 children from 5-31y ATM. From personal experience (4) and my observations of my brothers and sisters raising their children, youngsters do not ever develop the ability do chores without being told/asked/cajoled until they leave home, or until you do. As the current Gen are staying home longer, and boomeranging more often, I think my generation is resigned to telling, asking, cajoling longer.

However, I have three rules of thumb for realistic expectations and smoother running households: 1. If you can, you do. (E.g. Picking up toys at 18m to washing and ironing at 12y, regardless of gender) 2. Older siblings do more because younger siblings need more help. It's not all up to the parent. 3. If you're no longer a student, you look after yourself, do your share and you pay your share. Oohhhh and... There's no such thing as an allowance/pocket money once you have any kind of a job, or you turn 18.

I've also found it very useful to turn off the modem, unplug it and put it away until everything is the way I like it! Have a good book handy....
